Pulmonary Rehabilitation provides participants and their families with the information and support they need to control and relieve the symptoms and complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, restrictive pulmonary disease, asthma and other chronic conditions which cause breathing disorders.
Understanding that most patients with lung disease can maintain everyday activities if appropriate care measures are followed, pulmonary rehabilitation helps patients develop personal treatment plans that raise physical and social functioning to the highest level possible.
The pulmonary rehab team works with participants to develop a personalized plan of progress that includes:
- Exercise therapy
- Health education
- Breathing retraining
- Behavior modification services for nutrition and stress management
Care is provided by a multi-disciplinary staff of respiratory therapists, nutritionists and other professionals. In addition to providing instruction and counseling, staff members develop specific guidelines for physical activity and monitor each participant’s vital signs, symptoms and exercise responses.
Preventive and rehabilitative care for patients with pulmonary disease reduces the need for hospitalization and prolongs life. Increased knowledge of the disease process as well as changes in diet, exercise and smoking habits can decrease the impact of the disease and improve quality of life.
