The Society of Thoracic Surgeons – an organization representing more than 6,800 surgeons, researchers and allied healthcare professionals who work on the heart, lung and esophagus – recently released its latest data with Carolinas HealthCare System’s Levine Children’s Hospital receiving outstanding marks.

The results, which are maintained in a national database for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons, are based over a four-year rolling period with the most recent data collected from January 2010 through December 2013.
Benjamin Peeler, MD, chief of the pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery department at Carolinas HealthCare System, says the outcomes of neonatal mortality numbers, length of stay and hypoplastic left heart syndrome at Levine Children’s Hospital are exceptional.

“The outcomes prove that our team is committed to improving the level of quality care that we deliver to each patient and that Levine Children’s Hospital is home to one of the best teams of pediatric surgeons and healthcare professionals in the world,” Dr. Peeler said.

Dr. Peeler and his team care for the most pediatric heart patients in the region, with results well above the national average. In addition to the Society of Thoracic Surgery, patients’ survival rates have been honored by U.S. News & World Report.

Ranked as a "Best Children's Hospital" in cardiology & heart surgery, Levine Children’s Hospital is devoted to being a national leader in pediatric cardiac care.
