Research Summary

Research conducted at the Oral Medicine Research Laboratory uses metagenomics and genome-wide functional genomic approaches to investigate the molecular biomarkers in the oral cavity for both oral and systemic diseases. We have characterized the oral microbial composition in pneumonia, cancer chemotherapy, and bacteremia following dental manipulations. We have also determined the human genes involved in mucositis following chemotherapy in multiple cancers. We are currently studying the oral biomarkers of disease in head and neck cancer, infective endocarditis, Sjogren’s syndrome, and mucositis following conditioning regimens prior to hematopoietic stem cell transplant. We are using bioinformatics software/computational systems biology tools to investigate microbial community interactions, human gene interactions and drug effects in the oral cavity.

Our laboratory is also involved in genomic analysis of multi-drug resistant bacterial pathogens involved in health care associated infections as part of the collaborative effort with Dickson Analytics (DA2) and Department of Infection Control and Prevention.

The laboratory serves both internal and external collaborators. I lab operates under BSL-2 containment and practices, and is equipped with essential molecular microbiology equipment and state-of-the-art bioinformatics software/ computational systems biology tools. The research team is composed of researchers, clinicians, research nurses and other staff with expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, epidemiology, oral medicine, hospital-based dentistry and clinical trials.
