What is Energy Medicine?
The energy field of the body has been identified and manipulated for healing purposes by many ancient societies predating its discovery by physicists in modern times. Most patients experience this subtle energy as a state of peace or relaxation, and may have sensations of warmth or coolness as the energy is moved throughout the body alleviating pain or anxiety and promoting the healing process. Patients can also be taught to use these techniques for their own healing and even children can become adept in the process. There are many different programs that teach "hands on healing."
Some of the more popular ones used by medical professionals are Reiki (below), Quantum touch, therapeutic touch, and healing touch.
In Reiki therapy practice, a therapist places his or her hands in a series of very light touches at various positions on or near the patient's body. Reiki is not a massage, but a channeling of energy to the recipient for their use in self-healing.
Patients who have received Reiki treatments often claim that it helps them with:
- Pain relief
- Stress management
- Surgery recovery
- Chemotherapy related symptoms
Many scientific studies have shown benefits for energy healing practices. Benefits include decreased anxiety, decreased pain, and an improved sense of well-being. Based on the current positive indications of these studies, the National Institutes of Health is now funding further clinical trials at major research centers.
