You Have Questions – We Have Answers
What does a Sports Medicine and Injury Care specialist do?
Sports Medicine and Injury Care experts specialize in non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal, back, neck and medical conditions. The goal is to treat and prevent illness and injury – helping patients maximize function and minimize disability and time away from sports, work or school. The team also guides referrals to physical and occupational therapy or performs injections to treat the underlying condition.
Where are the Sports Medicine and Injury Care offices located?
Carolinas HealthCare System puts our experts in convenient locations so access to care is just around the corner.
If pain or an injury is getting in your way, call 704-863-HURT (4878) to make an appointment.
What special training does a Sports Medicine and Injury Care specialist have?
Sports Medicine and Injury Care specialists at Carolinas HealthCare System are trained in family medicine or physical medicine/rehabilitation. They may have one year of additional training in sports medicine or interventional pain medicine through an accredited fellowship program and may be certified in sports medicine or pain medicine. Many have had significant experience working directly with athletes and share this expertise with patients of all activity levels.
Do sports medicine specialists only treat competitive athletes?
No. Sports Medicine and Injury Care specialists are ideal physicians for the non-athlete as well, and are excellent resources for the individual who wishes to become active or begin an exercise program. For the “weekend warrior” or “industrial athlete” who experiences an injury, the same expertise used for the competitive athlete can be applied to return the patient to full function as quickly as possible.
What if the Sports Medicine and Injury Care is closed when I need care?
If you experience an injury during evening or weekend hours, access one of our many convenient urgent care centers, including children’s urgent care offices. If specialized care is needed, our staff will schedule your appointment with us for the very next work day.
What other services can a Sports Medicine and Injury Care specialist coordinate?
Our physicians coordinate any necessary imaging, testing, therapy and, if necessary, a referral to an orthopedic surgeon. As the largest integrated system in the region, all services can be set up within the Carolinas HealthCare System network.
