Carolinas HealthCare System

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is requiring that our electronic medical records system (EMR), called Canopy, is used to positively affect patient care. This new mandate is referred to as meaningful use, which includes three stages of compliance. Carolinas HealthCare System has already demonstrated the first of three stages, and now is preparing for meaningful use stage two.

Stage two focuses on advanced clinical procedures, including:

  • Additional requirements for Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) and e-prescribing
  • Electronic transmission of patient care summaries across multiple settings
  • Clinical quality measure reporting (CQM)
  • Increased patient and family engagement

What Does This Mean to You?

Stage two retains the same basic structures as stage one. Providers must report on all core objectives and three menu measures.

  • Eligible professionals (EPs) must meet 17 core objectives and three out of six menu objectives, for a total of 20 objectives, and report CQMs
  • Eligible hospitals (EHs) must meet 16 core objectives and three out of six menu objectives, for a total of 19 objectives and report CQMs

All providers at Carolinas HealthCare System are required to demonstrate meaningful use for a three-month EMR reporting period in 2014.

Your Patients Play a Role

There are five new stage two objectives, and several of them require actions from your patients:

  • Provide patients the ability to view online, download and transmit their health information on MyCarolinas.
    • Not only do you have to provide MyCarolinas for more than half of your patients, you also have to make sure that more than 5 percent actually access the information.
  • Provide clinical summaries for patients for each office visit

MyCarolinas will be available at all Carolinas HealthCare System practices by the end of March 2014. As we begin to prepare for meaningful use stage two, providers can encourage their patients to use MyCarolinas.  For questions on MyCarolinas, the Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group staff can assist you at 855-799-0044 or 704-667-9145 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays.
