Rehabilitation and Post Acute Care

Cancer treatments are literally lifesavers. But they can also cause physical, emotional and social issues that affect your quality of life. Levine Cancer Institute partners with many convenient rehabilitation facilities to provide patients with comprehensive cancer rehabilitation - physician-supervised programs specifically for people who have undergone treatment for all types of cancer. These programs address the individual needs of patients and their particular type of cancer, and can often improve function, reduce pain and improve overall well-being.

We want to see our patients regain as much independence as possible and improve their quality of life. This includes managing pain, building strength through exercise, improving bowel and bladder function and keeping patients out of the hospital. Rehabilitation may include:

  • Pain medications and pain management techniques
  • Exercise programs
  • Counseling
  • Activities to improve movement and decrease sleep problems
  • Assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as eating, dressing, bathing, toileting, handwriting, cooking and basic housekeeping
  • Quit-smoking aids
  • Stress, anxiety and depression management
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Management of chronic illness or complications due to cancer treatments
  • Vocational counseling

Lymphedema is a common side effect of cancer treatment and is the accumulation of fluid in the arms and legs resulting from damaged lymphatic vessels. Levine Cancer Institute partners with occupational therapists (OTs) and physical therapists (PTs) specially trained and certified in lymphedema treatment. Treatment commonly includes manual lymph drainage, skin care, exercise and compression bandaging which can be provided in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

Post Acute Care

The comprehensive and compassionate care you receive at Levine Cancer Institute doesn't end when your treatment does. We offer post-acute care, that addresses the medical and emotional needs of patients who are well enough to be out of the hospital, but not well enough to be home.

Teaming up with Carolinas Rehabilitation’s oncology program, we develop a patient-specific discharge plan that may consist of aggressive outpatient or home therapy services, outpatient community-based programs within the home such as hospice or palliative care.

Post-acute care helps people perform everything from activities of daily living (ADLs) such as eating, bathing and dressing, to handling medication and monitoring vital signs. Care may be temporary or continue for the rest of the patient's life.
