"The great thing about Levine Cancer Institute is that it builds on the achievements of excellent physicians and staff affiliated cancer centers throughout the entire system. We have an opportunity that is historically unique to take cancer care to a new level in the Carolinas."--
Dr. Derek Raghavan, President of Levine Cancer Institute
Levine Cancer Institute was formed in 2010 by CHS as part of an innovative vision to deliver world-class cancer care across the Carolinas. The Institute builds upon a strong network of affiliated hospitals and providers.
In Charlotte, the operations of Carolinas Medical Center's Blumenthal Cancer Center will be thoroughly integrated into the Institute. The development of the Institute means more communities can benefit from the expertise of the Blumenthal Cancer Center team. The Institute is grateful for the vital role the Blumenthal family plays in the development of this network.
The Institute is made possible by a $20 million leadership gift from the Leon Levine Foundation, the foundation's largest gift to date. To honor this extraordinary support from the Levine family, Carolinas HealthCare Foundation and community volunteers have pledged to raise an additional $5 million in endowment funds in support of the institute. Future plans are to invest more than $500 million over a 10-year period, which will be supplemented by local philanthropy.
