Benjamin B. Peeler, MD, is the chief of pediatric and adult congenital cardiothoracic surgery at Levine Children's Hospital and Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute. Dr. Peeler specializes in neonatal, pediatric and adult congenital heart surgery.
Dr. Peeler graduated from Wake Forest University and attended medical school at Vanderbilt University. After medical school, he completed his general surgery residency at Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals. Following residency, he continued his extensive surgical training at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, as a fellow in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery and vascular surgery. Dr. Peeler concluded his comprehensive fellowship training at Emory University with a third fellowship in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery.
Before joining the Sanger Heart and Vascular Institute in November 2009, Dr. Peeler was the surgical director of the Virginia Children's Heart Center at the University of Richmond in Charlottesville. He also directed the pediatric cardiac surgery program at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond and performed surgery at the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Norfolk, VA. He has published more than 30 manuscripts, six book chapters and multiple abstracts in addition to participating in numerous teaching activities and presenting at conferences nationwide. In 2007, Dr. Peeler won the University of Virginia School of Medicine Dean's Award for Clinical Excellence, awarded to a faculty member who demonstrates exemplary patient service and a high level of clinical skill.
Dr. Peeler performs the full spectrum of pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery. In July 2012, he was reconigzed by Charlotte Magazine as one of Charlotte's Top Doctors. Most recently, he was one of only four physicians to be recognized as the "2012 Excellence in Health Care: Physician of the Year" from the Charlotte Business Journal. This award honors a physician whose job performance is considered exemplary by patients and peers.
