Salary and Benefits

Salary and Benefits for Internal Medicine ResidentsDuring the 2014-2015 academic year, salaries for House Staff in the Graduate Medical Education Programs at Carolinas Medical Center are as follows:

  • PGY-1 $49,918
  • PGY-2 $51,178
  • PGY-3 $52,969

Benefits

CMC provides (at no charge to the House Staff) medical coverage under the Choice 20 Plan or Choice 30 Plan, prescription drug coverage with CarolinaCARE/Catarnaran and dental coverage with DELTA Dental Plan for House Staff and their family members. Professional liability, life, and disability insurances are provided for House Staff only. Vision plan and other voluntary benefits are available with premiums being payroll deducted.

Premiums for medical insurance are paid for House Staff and their families for the Choice 20 Plan or Choice 30 Plan. House Staff will be responsible for deductibles and co-pays for office visits, prescription and dental expenses.

Dental Insurance

  • Coverage for house staff and family members. $1200 maximum per person, per calendar year. There is an annual deductible of $50 per person. Carolinas HealthCare System will pay premiums, House Staff pay deductible and co-pays.

Professional Liability Insurance

  • Malpractice insurance coverage provided for all actions occurring while performing residency responsibilities

Life InsuranceSalary and Benefits for Internal Medicine Residents

  • Term life insurance equal to annual salary

Disability Insurance

  • Short-Term: Eligible for disability benefits following 90 days of service. Payments equal to 60 percent of weekly salary begin after 30 days of disability.
  • Long-Term: Payments begin after 90 days of disability. Monthly payments based on salary when disability begins.

Two weeks vacation plus five days at Christmas/New Year's. Typically also allowed moving time from June 24-30.
PGY-2 year Two weeks vacation plus five days at Christmas/New Year's.

One week of CME time for an educational trip in the Continental US, for which tuition and expenses up to $1900 are provided.

401K

Basic contribution. Each year, Carolinas HealthCare System will contribute two percent of your pay to your account, regardless of whether you save through the plan. Matching contribution. When you save through the plan, Carolinas HealthCare System will match: 75 percent of the first four percent of pay that you save and 50 percent of the next two percent of pay that you save, making the total maximum match four percent of your pay.

In order to receive the full four percent match, you must save six percent of your pay through the plan. Discretionary contribution. This contribution is based on System performance, similar to the Performance Plus program. When we meet certain targets, your account can receive an additional contribution, based on your service.

Continuing Education [CE]

Carolinas Medical Center provides one week of CE time for an educational trip in the Continental US, for which tuition and expenses up to $1900 are provided. CE funds can also be used to pay professional dues and purchase approved educational resources such as software and textbooks.

Family Leave

  • Up to six weeks for qualifying circumstances

Uniforms

  • Three lab coats and laundry service provided

Meals

  • Meal points are provided quarterly for use in the three hospital cafeterias and Caribou Coffee®

Moonlighting

  • PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents are allowed to moonlight assuming program director approval of the activity
  • There is a popular voluntary moonlighting opportunity available

Technology

  • All housestaff receive an iPad or iPad mini at the beginning of residency training.  Using this device, resident may seamlessly connect to the hospital network and electronic medical record which makes patient rounding even more efficient.  

Parking

  • Free covered and reserved parking for residents

  • We also have a Department Softball team, and hold at least one Department Golf Tournament per year
