There are few things more frightening than the unknown. If your child needs neurology care, he or she is probably nervous, is possibly scared and definitely has questions. At Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, NC, we partner with families to provide excellent healthcare in a child-friendly environment. One way we do this is through family education. Our compassionate staff will educate you and your child about his or her condition and expected treatments.
Once you understand what your child's condition is and how it will be treated, speak with your child. Ask what concerns or questions he or she has. Address each concern and answer each question as clearly as you can, at the level that your child can understand. If you're asked a question you don't know the answer to, ask a member of your child's care team.
Ask your physician or nurse at Levine Children's Hospital if you can tour the hospital in advance of your child's stay or procedure. This way, when the time comes to visit or be admitted for treatment, it won't be so strange. Ask if there is pre-education or orientation for your child's condition and treatment. Should your child need surgery, it's possible he or she may need to stay in the hospital overnight. Always reassure your child that you will be there when he or she wakes up.
