Hazel Tapp, PhD, currently serves as the Associate Director of Research in the Department of Family Medicine at Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte, NC. Her current research interests are implementing and evaluating patient-centered approaches to care such as motivational interviewing and shared decision making in order to improve health outcomes for chronic disease. On one project designed to improve asthma outcomes by improving quality of care for patients with asthma, Dr. Tapp helped implement shared decision making at Carolinas HealthCare System safety-net primary care practices that provide care to Charlotte’s underserved population.
Also, in partnership with community members, community organizational representatives, providers, and other research team members, she serves as a participating member of the Mecklenburg Area Partnership for Primary Care Research community advisory board (CAB). The CAB uses community-based participatory research methods to choose, develop and implement research interventions designed to improve the health of the Hispanic community in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County area. In 2012 Dr. Tapp helped set up a patient advisory board at Elizabeth Family Medicine that is now meeting monthly.
