ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Prehospital Education Programs

Admission to the Center for Prehospital Medicine
The program curriculum is designed to prepare graduates to enter the workforce as paramedics. Additionally, the program can provide an Associate Degree for individuals desiring an opportunity for career enhancement.

The course of study provides the student an opportunity to acquire basic and advanced life support knowledge and skills by utilizing classroom instruction, practical laboratory sessions, hospital clinical experience, and field internships with emergency medical service agencies.

Students progressing through the program become eligible to apply for both state and national certification exams. Employment opportunities include ambulance services, fire and rescue agencies, air medical services, specialty areas of hospitals, industry, educational institutions and government agencies.

Admission to the Paramedic Educational Programs is competitive and offered on a space available basis. To be considered for conditional admission to any program in the Prehospital Medicine Department, applicants must submit the following by the specified deadlines for each program:

  • Completed application form to the Carolinas College of Health Sciences and submit the $35 application fee.
  • Official transcript from high school, G.E.D., adult high school diploma, or an approved home school (waived for college graduates with proof of graduation)
  • Official Transcripts submitted from all post secondary education institutions attended.
  • Official SAT or ACT test score report (waived by request for applicants with greater than 72 semester hours of college credit). Score report on high school transcript is considered official. Minimum of 850 SAT (18 ACT) required.
  • Complete the Basic EMT Assessment Exam prior to the start of the program with a grade of at least 70.
  • Interview with the EMS Department Faculty
  • Interview with the Medical Director of the Center for Prehospital Medicine
  • Posses a current and valid drivers license
Upon successful completion of the criteria listed above, the candidate's name will be forwarded to the College Admission, Progression, and Graduation (APG) Committee. The APG Committee will notify applicants regarding admission decisions, which may include conditional admission, placement on a waiting list, or denial of admission. Students placed on a waiting list are notified if/as space become available. Applicants offered conditional admission to any program are sent written notification of final course admission upon receipt of the following:
  • Signed admission confirmation and receipt of non-refundable $100 tuition deposit.
  • Documentation of current CPR with either the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.
  • A physical and emotional health assessment of the applicant's ability to meet the Essential Functions of the program.
  • Immunization records indicating current and complete compliance with the NC administrative code (19A-0401) as amended in 1994.
  • Proof of graduation from high school, G.E.D., adult high school diploma, or an approved home school (waived for college graduates with proof of graduation)
  • Completion of High School Biology with a "C" or better.
Admission to the Medic Academy Program
The Medic Paramedic Academy is a closed course with enrollment limited to students sponsored by the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency. This is a diploma program which leads to fulfilling the requirements for testing as an EMT-Paramedic, if all courses are successfully completed. Applicants to the program must meet all of the criteria as listed above as well as:
  • Show proof of a current North Carolina State Office of EMS Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic recognition card.
  • Complete the Basic EMT Assessment Exam prior to the start of the program with a grade of at least 70.
  • Take and successfully complete the HOBET (health occupations basic entrance test).
Medic Academy Program

Admission to the Paramedic Bridging Program Option
The Emergency Medical Science Bridge Program is designed to allow currently certified non-degree paramedics to earn an Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Emergency Medical Science. Paramedics enrolled in the bridge program must complete the EMS Bridge, Rescue Scene Management, EMS Management, Emergency Vehicles and EMS Communications, and EMS Capstone courses along with all related and general education course requirements for the EMS degree.

  1. General college admission requirements.
  2. Complete interview with EMS Department faculty.
  3. At least 1,000 hours of patient contact at the paramedic level as evidenced by the signature of the director of the EMS agency with which the paramedic is affiliated and the medical director of the ALS system with which the paramedic is affiliated. (waived with proof of successful completion of the National Registry Paramedic Level Examination)
  4. Current EMT-Paramedic certification.* (A copy of the paramedic education program transcript must be on file in the EMS Department and the College of Health Sciences Registrar's Office.)
  5. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.*
  6. Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.*
  7. Current Basic Trauma Life Support certification.*
  8. Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification.*
* Copies of all current certifications must be on file in the EMS Department prior to beginning the EMS Bridge Program.
