We are a Level 1 Trauma Center that provides tertiary care to all areas of North Carolina, Southern Virginia, Northern South Carolina and Western Tennessee. This provides wide ranging familiarity with all diagnostic groups and disease states encountered in PM&R.
Outpatient Experience:
The resident outpatient experience includes numerous outpatient clinics at Carolinas Rehabilitation, CMC, and private practice offices within the community. For those practice sites that are off the Carolinas Rehabilitation campus the majority are located within a short drive from Carolinas Rehabilitation so noontime lectures are easily attended.
The outpatient experiences available include: General Disability (BI, SCI, CVA, Orthopedic/multiple trauma), Prosthetics and Orthotics, Myofascial Pain/Fibromyalgia, lymphedema/cancer rehabilitation, Brachial Plexus Program,
Post Polio Syndrome, general musculoskeletal medicine, musculoskeletal subspecialties (spine, foot and ankle, sports, rheumatologic….etc.), and Complementary/Alternative Medicine.
Electrodiagnostic Medicine:
Electrodiagnostic medicine (EMG) is an essential part of our residency program and part of our broad based training. Electrodiagnostic procedures are performed in numerous settings with the average resident performing over 300 procedures. Six months of training is allotted for pure electrodiagnosis however resident experience in the these procedures often occurs during other rotations and during elective time if requested. Resident involvement in the procedures is one of graded responsibility based on resident experience and knowledge base. All PGY-2's are teamed up with a more senior resident for all EMG rotations to assist in individual instruction and guidance. Numerous faculty in various settings provide for a well rounded approach and wide spread exposure to all patient populations and all diagnostic categories. Full-time faculty Carolinas Rehabilitation physiatrists and CMC Neurologists and part-time faculty private practitioners all participate in the teaching program. Many of our physiatrists and neurologists are board certified by the American Board of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (ABENM).
Interventional Procedures:
From trigger point injections to epidural steroid spinal injections, our resident staff are exposed to all aspects of interventional physiatric procedures. This occurs within Carolinas Rehabilitation, Carolinas Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, private practice offices and clinics. Through the experience obtained within our residency programs many of our residents have chosen to subspecialize in musculoskeletal and pain medicine and further their education via fellowships locally and nationally.
