Oro-facial pain (Navy):
1. Become proficient in the interview of patients with facial pain.
2. Gain expertise in head/neck clinical examination of patients with facial pain.
3. Be able to perform and understand the rationale for diagnostic tests.
4. Become proficient in the differential diagnosis of facial pain conditions.
5. Understand the pathophysiology of facial pain.
6. Become proficient in providing appropriate treatment options for patients with facial pain.
7. Understand rationale and mechanism of medications used to treat facial pain.

Oral Pathology/Oral Radiology (UNC):
1. Understand terms utilized in describing histological specimens.
2. Understand the pathophysiology associated with common oral lesions.
3. Be able to differentiate benign vs. malignant histopathological changes.
4. Understand different laboratory techniques to identify microbiological agents.
5. Have exposure to immunofluorescence staining and the rationale for its use.
6. Understand terms utilized in describing radiographs.
7. Be able to provide a differential diagnosis of bony lesions.
8. Be able to recognize abnormalities with CT and MRI.
9. Differentiate benign vs. malignant radiographic changes.

Internal Medicine:
1. Understand the pathophysiology of common disease states.
2. Understand mechanism and rationale of medication use in common disease states.
3. Gain a deeper understanding of laboratory tests used to diagnose and monitor disease activity of patients on service.
4. Understand the signs/symptoms of common disease states.
5. Understand the medical consequence of long-term immunosuppression.
6. Gain an understanding and be able to perform a more complete history and physical evaluation of patients.

Psychiatry:
1. Understand common diagnoses in a psychiatric clinical practice.
2. Gain an understanding and be able to perform a more complete psychological evaluation of patients.
3. Understand the mechanism of medications used in psychiatry.
4. Understand the drug interaction and side effects of medications used to manage psychiatric patients.

Cardiology:
1. CHF: recognition of signs and symptoms.
2. Ischemic Heart Disease: Treatment medications.
3. Valvular Dysfunction: recognition of signs and symptoms.
4. Congenital heart defects: Physiological consequence and recognition of signs and symptoms.
5. Infective Endocarditis: recognition of signs and symptoms.
6. Recognize cardiac disease by physical exam.
7. Recognition of dysfunction, a strong understanding of risks involved with providing. Invasive/stressful dental procedures to patients with certain cardiac diseases (e.g. ischemic heart disease) is a goal.

Hematology/Oncology:
1. Understand the mechanisms of chemotherapeutic agents.
2. Rationale for the timing of chemotherapy delivery.
3. Understand the range of side effects with chemotherapy.
4. Potential drug interactions of chemotherapeutic agents.
5. An understanding of the pathophysiology of malignancies treated in the clinic.

Physical Therapy:
1. Understand the rationale and goals for the use of PT in TMD patients.
2. Be able to perform a clinical examination of head and neck muscles.
3. Understand treatment options provided by PT for the treatment of Head and Neck pain.

Infectious Disease:
1. Understand the signs/symptoms and treatment of septicemia.
2. Understand the diagnostic tests utilized for infections (bacterial, viral, fungal).
3. Understand signs/symptoms and treatment of infective endocarditis.
4. Gain an appreciation for the infectious processes in AIDS patients.
5. Understand treatment regimens (and potential side effects/drug interactions) for patients with HIV.
6. Gain an understanding for the rationale for antibiotic use in various bacterial infections.
7. Gain an understanding of infectious processes important in immunocompromised patients.

Dermatology:
1. Understand the pathophysiology of conditions that affect skin and mucosal surface.
2. Become more proficient in obtaining a history and physical evaluation of patients.
3. Understand extra-oral physical findings of vesiculoerosive diseases.
4. Understand the rationale of diagnostic tests utilized in a dermatology practice.
5. Understand the rationale for the use of topical vs. systemic medications for vesiculoerosive diseases.
6. Understand the mechanism of action of medications used in a dermatology practice.

Nephrology:
1. Understand the pathophysiology of renal disease.
2. Gain a deeper understanding of laboratory tests used to diagnose and monitor disease activity of renal disease.
3. Understand signs and symptoms of renal insufficiency and renal failure.
4. Understand the rationale and mechanism of peritoneal and hemodialysis.
5. Understand the medical consequence of immunosuppression in patients that have received a renal transplant.

Hepatology:
1. Understand the pathophysiology of liver disease.
2. Gain a deeper understanding of laboratory tests used to diagnose and monitor disease activity or liver disease.
3. Understand signs and symptoms of liver disease.
4. Understand acquired coagulopathies associated with liver disease and how these may affect invasive dental procedures.
5. Understand treatment options for liver disease (hereditary vs. viral vs. alcoholic).

Neurology:
1. Understand the anatomical and pathophysiologic basis of neuropathic pain.
2. Become proficient in the development of a differential diagnosis of neuropathic pain.
3. Understand the role of imaging techniques and diagnostic tests utilized in a neurology practice.
4. Understand signs and symptoms (e.g. cranial nerves) of neoplastic processes involving the head and neck.
5. Understand treatment options for patients with neuropathic pain conditions.

Endocrinology:
1. Understand the pathophysiology of endocrine abnormalities.
2. Understand signs and symptoms of endocrine abnormalities.
3. Gain a deeper understanding of laboratory tests used to diagnose and monitor disease activity of endocrine disease.
4. Understand treatment options for patients with endocrine abnormalities.
