In addition, there are over 30 practitioners from the community who volunteer their time in the clinical teaching program. This well-rounded and dedicated group of general practitioners and specialists ensures high quality instruction for our residents.
Peter B. Lockhart, DDS
A native of Massachusetts, graduated from University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. After completing a two-year GPR at University of Vermont College of Medicine, he joined the faculty at Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he directed the GPR program, practiced, taught, and conducted clinical research for 10 years. He joined Carolinas Medical Center as Chairman of the Department of Oral Medicine and Director of Residency Training in 1987. He has held leadership positions in several national and international organizations. He was a recipient of a World Health Organization Fellowship in Oral Medicine in 1994 and a TC White Visiting Professorship in Glasgow, Scotland in 1997-98. He holds Fellowship in Dental Surgery diplomas from both The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He has a variety of clinical and research interests in oral medicine, particularly the dental management of medically compromised patients. He has written many articles and chapters and is the editor of a popular textbook, Dental Care for the Medically Complex Patient. He and his wife Sandy have two children.
Timothy L. Cox, DDS
An Illinois native, graduated from University of Illinois College of Dentistry. After completing a two-year GPR at Medical Center of Louisiana (Charity Hospital) in New Orleans, he served as Assistant Director of the GPR program at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. Following a year in private practice with a medical staff appointment at St. Louis University Health Sciences Center, he joined the faculty of Meriter Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin as Director of the GPR program. In December 1999 he joined the Department of Oral Medicine and serves as Director of the General Practice Residency. He is a Fellow in the American Association of Hospital Dentists, holds Membership in Special Needs Dentistry from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and serves as a site visitor for the American Dental Association's Council on Dental Accreditation for postdoctoral general dentistry programs. He is also a Diplomate in the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. His clinical interests include the dental management of medically compromised patients, conscious sedation, operating room dentistry, and oral medicine. He and his wife Karen have two children and enjoy various family activities and outdoor sports (cycling, hiking, and golf).
Michael T. Brennan, DDS, MHS
A native of Iowa, attended University of Iowa for both his undergraduate and dental training. After his dental training, he completed a GPR at Loyola University Hospital, Chicago. Following residency training, he received a Certificate in Oral Medicine at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland and a Masters of Health Science in Clinical Research from Duke University. He then joined the Department of Oral Medicine in June 2000, and serves as the Oral Medicine Residency Director. He has a number of clinical interests including the management of mucosal and salivary gland diseases, mucositis, facial pain, and medically compromised patients. He and his wife Joanne have two children and enjoy numerous outdoor sports.
Ford T. Grant, DMD
A native of Kentucky, attended University of Louisville for his undergraduate, dental, and GPR training. In 1985 he joined the faculty of University of Louisville School of Dentistry as a part-time clinical instructor in periodontics while establishing a solo private practice in general dentistry. After five years of private practice, during which he treated homebound individuals utilizing portable equipment, he entered the two-year Geriatric Fellowship Program at University of Kentucky's Sanders-Brown Center on Aging. Upon completion of his fellowship in 1992, he joined the faculty of the Department of Oral Medicine as Director of Geriatric Dentistry. In 1997 he initiated Carolinas Mobile Dentistry, a pilot project to provide access to dental care for nursing home residents and experience in on-site dental care of the medically compromised for dental residents in the GPR program. He holds fellowships in the American College of Dentists, the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry, and the Academy of Dentistry International, and Membership in Special Needs Dentistry in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He serves in various community and professional organizations and is on the Board of Directors of Access Dental Care. His other clinical and academic interests include access to care, ethics, and intraoral video and clinical photography. He and his wife Debbie have three children and enjoy family activities, golf, and photography.
Philip C. Fox, DDS
A native of New York, attended Columbia University for both his undergraduate and dental training. Following completion of a residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harlem Hospital Center in New York City, he accepted a research position at the National Institutes of Health, where he also completed a fellowship in Oral Medicine. He was a member of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research for 22 years, serving as a Senior Investigator and Chief of the Clinical Investigations Section, Gene Therapy and Therapeutics Branch, as Director of the Oral Medicine Training Program, and as Clinical Director of the Intramural Research Program. From 1999-2000, he was Director of Research and Development at Amarillo Biosciences, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing new biologics for treatment of human diseases. At present, he is a consultant to the biotechnology industry and Visiting Scientist at Carolinas Medical Center, Department of Oral Medicine. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine and recipient of numerous professional awards. His research has focused on the causes and effects of salivary gland dysfunctions, with particular emphasis on the immunopathogenic mechanisms of Sjögren's syndrome. He and his wife Jeri have two children.
Matthew J. Johnson, M.D., D.M.D.
Graduated from University of Louisville School of Dentistry. He served three years as a Captain in the United States Army. Based in Germany, he received many commendations, including meritorious unit and expert field medical badge. In 1993, he entered the oral and maxillofacial surgery program at University of Miami. He received his Doctor of Medicine from University of Miami School of Medicine in 1996. He then completed a 1-year residency in general surgery as a second year resident status, finishing his oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at University of Miami-Jackson Memorial in 1999. He published an article in the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery on facial pattern injuries associated with water sports accidents in 2000. He joined the Department of Oral Medicine in March 2002 and maintains a private practice in Huntersville and Mooresville.
John A. "Tony" Johnson, DMD, MD
A native of Kentucky, graduated from University of Louisville School of Dentistry. Upon completion of a general practice residency at University of Louisville Hospital, he entered the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at the same institution. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Louisville School of Medicine in 1997. He then completed a one-year residency in general surgery and finished his training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at University of Louisville in 2000. He joined the Department of Oral Medicine in March 2002 and maintains two private practices with his brother Matt. He and his wife Lillian have one child. In his leisure time, he enjoys videography, movie production, and tennis.
Melanie K. Marshall, DMD, MD
A native of Maryland, graduated from Duke University, followed by The University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. She entered the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at University of Louisville and received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the School of Medicine at the same institution. After a year of general surgery residency, she completed her OMFS training at Louisville in 2004. She spent the remainder of 2004 at the University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia engaged in fellowship training focusing in the treatment of malignant and benign head and neck pathology. She joined the Department of Oral Medicine in January of 2005. In her free time she enjoys swimming, yoga and playing tennis.
