The second year of residency (PGY-2) is divided into six rotations: obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, night float, ambulatory care, and ultrasound/ genetics.

Obstetrics
The PGY-2 resident has the primary responsibility for initiation of therapy for the obstetric patient. During this period of time, the resident receives the most concentrated exposure to the practice of obstetrics. A PGY-3 resident, a senior resident and faculty, supervises the PGY-2.

Staff Gynecology
During this rotation, the physician acquires first-hand experience with the many minor surgical procedures related to our specialty. Additionally, he/she serves as first assistant with major gynecologic operative procedures. The PGY-2 resident will also be involved in the screening of outpatients regarding the need for major and minor gynecologic surgical procedures.

Gynecologic Oncology
This rotation exposes the resident to an in-depth experience in the management of gynecologic malignancies. Residents are exposed to all current diagnostic and therapeutic modalities in the treatment of gynecologic cancers, in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Advanced Ultrasound and Genetics
Extensive exposure to abdominal and vaginal ultrasound in both obstetric and gynecologic patients will form the basis of this rotation. The resident will be exposed to a variety of experiences in clinical genetics including active involvement in genetic counseling and genetic amniocentesis. Exposure to cytogenetics and molecular genetics laboratory methods is an integral part of understanding this specialty. At the conclusion of this rotation, the resident should be well versed in the field of OB-GYN ultrasound techniques and clinical perinatal genetics.

Ambulatory Care
Exposure to all aspects of caring for women in obstetrics and gynecology clinics forms the basis of this rotation. The resident will be assigned to evaluate women with pregnancy complications including diabetes, hypertensive disease, thyroid disorders, and abnormal fetal growth. Women with a variety of gynecologic problems will be assigned to this resident under direct supervision of an attending physician.

Night Float
Weekday night call is a night rotation in which the resident works from early evening until the next morning on Sunday - Thursday nights. Each weekend is free until Sunday evening. This is a 10 week rotation alternating as a five-week block with obstetrics.
