WELCOME FROM THE CHAIR AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR

We are so pleased that you are interested in doing your Internal Medicine Residency Training at Carolinas Medical Center.

We offer a program with a long history of training high quality internists, hospitalists, academicians, and future subspecialists. We also offer many diverse curricular options, and allow you the flexibility to 'tailor' a residency to your specific needs.

Dr. Scott Furney is the Interim Chairman of Medicine. He completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Michigan in the prestigious Inteflex Program, graduating with Honors. During medical school, he earned the honor of being inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Furney then completed his internship and residency at the University of Michigan as well, earning "Resident of the Year" honors in his final year. He was also chosen to be chief resident at the University of Michigan after completing his training. He stayed on faculty in Ann Arbor, becoming medical director of the General Medicine inpatient services. In 1997 he completed training at the Stanford Faculty Development Program in Clinical Teaching and has been a strong proponent of the "resident as educator" since that time. He joined the faculty at Carolinas Medical Center in 2002, and was named the Vice-Chair of the Department in 2005 before being named the Interim Chair in 2007. He is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a member of UNC-Chapel Hill's prestigious Academy of Educators.

Dr. Furney is deeply committed to education at all levels and is known by the residents as a strong proponent of evidence-based medicine and bedside physical exam skills. He has received numerous teaching awards throughout his career and maintains a constant presence in all aspects of our teaching program. He has been a great addition to the CMC faculty and serves as a role model as a consummate clinician and educator.

Dr. Beth E. Susi is the Residency Program Director. She graduated with honors from the University of Miami in 1990, and went on to receive her MD degree from the University of Florida in 1994. She was president of her medical school class for 3 years, and received the Student Hippocratic Award from her class as the outstanding student of the year. She did her internship and residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA, and received the Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1997. She then joined the faculty in Internal Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center and was named the Associate Program Director in the year 2000. She served in that position until being named the Program Director in 2003. Dr. Susi is also a Clinical Professor of Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a member of UNC-Chapel Hill's prestigious Academy of Educators. Her clinical interests include physician-pharmaceutical interactions, perioperative evaluations, and innovations in resident education. She is intimately involved with every detail of the Internal Medicine residency, and maintains an active presence at Morning Report, daily conferences and attending work on the teaching services. She serves as a role model for her compassionate manner with patients, and as a strong resident advocate for the Internal Medicine program.

We both hope to meet you soon!!
