PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Internal Medicine program at Carolinas Medical Center has a rich history dating back to 1968.
- Inpatient training is done exclusively at CMC's main facility, which has over 850 beds
- Levine’s Childrens Hospital, which will have over 100 beds, will open in December 2007
- A brand new, state of the art, 30 bed Medical Intensive Care Unit training facility is slated to open in December 2007
- Ambulatory training (both general medicine and subspecialty clinics) is located at CMC Myers Park, located just 2 blocks from CMC
- Over 30,000 patient care visits take place there each year
- CMC is a Level I trauma center, with over 114,000 ED visits last year
Our program serves Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, as well as the surrounding counties. Our referral base is about 1.5 million people and includes Western North Carolina, and South Carolina; we are only eight miles from the South Carolina border.
The Department of Medicine is truly a group of devoted clinician-educators, with a full time faculty of over 40 and a private faculty of over 75.
- We strongly promote one-on-one education
- Many of the consult blocks will pair an attending to a resident one-on-one!
- There is a very high faculty to resident ratio
- Housestaff interact daily with our faculty daily both on wards and in clinics
- Residents in the program have the opportunity to do many procedures during their training here
- Many of the full-time faculty have private practice experience, which allows for the information passed on to the housestaff to be both evidence-based and practical
We are strongly committed to a comprehensive learning experience for residents, providing an outstanding training atmosphere, and are devoted to resident teaching and patient care. We also promote a healthy balance between professional and personal life. We believe that a happy work life goes hand in hand with a happy and fulfilling home life.
