LIFE AFTER RESIDENCY - FELLOWSHIPS AND PRIVATE PRACTICE

Despite the technical label of 'community' hospital - which really only means there is no medical school physically in Charlotte - our residents have a very broad based educational/patient exposure that is identical to that of the majority of 'University' programs.

One myth we would like to debunk is that you will have difficulty obtaining a fellowship if you come here for residency. On average, 30 - 40% of our residents enter fellowship training after their residency is complete. In years past, our residents have entered everything from Gastroenterology and Cardiology to Rheumatology and Hematology-Oncology.

Since 2003 alone, 14 of our 40 graduating residents have chosen fellowships. The number of residents entering fellowships fluctuates from year to year but averages about 30-40%. Our class of 2006 had 5 of 10 residents entering fellowship!

Some of the fellowships obtained just in the past 3 years include:

  • University of Florida - Cardiology
  • University of Kentucky - Hematology-Oncology
  • University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill - Endocrinology
  • University of Tennessee-Memphis - Hematology-Oncology
  • University of Virginia - Cardiology
  • Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center - GI [2 residents]
  • Rush University - Cardiology [2 residents]
  • Wake Forest University - Nephrology [3 residents]

(1999-2007)! Where are they now?

Overall, our residents' career options have been boundless. An interesting phenomenon that we have seen is that our residents often choose to stay 'round here! Charlotte continues to grow by leaps and bounds; we are really pushing the envelope toward being one of America's top tier cities. Given that fact, many have chosen to enter General Internal Medicine in the Charlotte community, both in outpatient practices and as hospitalists.
