APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications for the General Surgery Residency Program at Carolinas Medical Center are accepted for the three categorical
positions and the two preliminary position from participants in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) through the
Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applications for the next academic year are accepted when the ERAS post
office opens in August. The General Surgery application deadline is always November 1. Please note that interview days are
often filled before this date, so early application is recommended. Paper applications are not accepted.
Invitations for interviews are based on review of all application materials. Interviews are scheduled in December and
January each year and are on a first-come, first-served basis. Invitations for interviews are sent via e-mail. Please
respond to an interview invitation immediately to reserve an interview time, since interview days fill quickly.
The Interview day begins at 8 a.m. with a welcome and overview of the residency program. Resident applicants are interviewed by two or more faculty members. Following interviews,
applicants tour Carolinas Medical Center and are given an opportunity to tour the Cannon Research facility, which is on campus.
All applicants have ample time to talk informally with other applicants, current surgical residents and surgical attendings during
the day and at lunch.
