Harold F. Hamit, M.D., FACS
Chairman, Department of Surgery, and Director of Surgical Education 1970 to 1986
A 1944 graduate of the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Hamit served in the U.S.
Army in the South Pacific during World War II and was a member of the first MASH unit during the
Korean War in 1950. Before becoming chairman of the Department of Surgery, he was the chief of
surgery and commanding officer of the 121st Evacuation Hospital in Korea, the chief of General
Surgery at Brooke Army General Hospital, and the U.S. Army's medical inspector general in Viet Nam
in 1967. Dr. Hamit's career in medical education began at Brooke Army General Hospital where he
worked in the residency training program. He continued participating in surgical resident training
at Carolinas Medical Center for several years after his retirement in 1986.
L. G. Walker Jr., M.D., FACS
Chairman, Department of Surgery, and Director of Surgical Education 1986 to 1997
Dr. Walker is a graduate of the Medical College of Alabama. Following a surgical internship at
the University of Virginia Hospital, he was on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1957 to 1959.
After discharge, he completed one year of surgical residency at the University of Michigan Hospital, two years at George Washington University Hospital, and finished his general surgery residency at Emory University in 1963. Dr. Walker served as a staff surgeon at the Veterans Hospital in Iron Mountain, Mich., and at the Veterans Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., where he became assistant chief of Surgery.
Dr. Walker came to Charlotte to join the Nalle Clinic in 1969. He joined the staff at Charlotte
Memorial Hospital (later renamed Carolinas Medical Center) the same year and became an attending
in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Walker served as chief of service in the Department of General
Surgery from 1981 to 1986 and became chairman and director of surgical education in 1986. Dr.
Walker retired in June 1997 when Dr. Frederick L. Greene became chairman and director of surgical
education.
Frederick L. Greene, M.D.
Chairman, Department of Surgery and Director of Surgical Residency Program 1997 to present
Frederick L. Greene, M.D. received his medical school training at the University of Virginia and completed
a residency in surgery at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Greene was also an American Cancer Society
Clinical Research Fellow at Yale. He is currently Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of North
Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Greene is an active clinician in the area of surgical oncology and has been involved in organizational
work pertaining to cancer for a number of years. Dr. Greene has served on the Commission on Cancer of the
American College of Surgeons for the last 12 years and is currently serving as the Chairman of the Commission.
He has represented the American College of Surgeons on the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) and served
as Chair of the AJCC from 2000-2004. Dr. Greene represents the AJCC and serves as Vice-Chair of the TNM Staging
Core Group of the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) based in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Greene is
also the Editor of the 6th Edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual.
Dr. Greene's publications have included approximately 150 papers, 30 book chapters, and two textbooks
relating to cancer surgery and, specifically, the use of laparoscopic surgery in the treatment of patients
with cancer. Dr. Greene is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and has served as a Governor.
He belongs to numerous surgical organizations including the Society of Surgical Oncology, the Southern Surgical
Association, and the American Surgical Association. Dr. Greene is a Founding Member and was president of
the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), 1992-1993. He was awarded the Distinguished
Service Award by SAGES in 2004.
