SPORTS MEDICINE FELLOWSHIP

The Department of Family Medicine started a Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship in July 2005. The fellowship is a one year, ACGME accredited program open to physicians who have completed residency training in Family Medicine OR Emergency Medicine. The purpose of the fellowship is to develop expertise in the area of primary care sports medicine. The fellow will work closely with the sports medicine faculty of the Department of Family Medicine as well as the orthopedic sports medicine physicians from OrthoCarolina, Charlotte's largest orthopedic group. The orthopedic clinics, the Family Practice Center Sports Medicine Clinics, as well as the training rooms of UNC Charlotte and Johnson C. Smith University, will provide ample training for the fellow. The fellow is responsible for providing team coverage for the athletes of these universities, and may also choose to cover a wide variety of other sporting events. Working with physical therapists, radiologists, podiatrists, and other orthopedic specialists will enhance the fellowship experience. Finally, our fellow becomes proficient at exercise stress testing and exercise prescription, and develops lecture, teaching, and publication skills. At the conclusion of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to sit for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.

Applicants must have completed a 3 year accredited residency in Family Medicine or Emergency Medicine. For application deadlines and schedule dates, see the NRMP schedule of dates from the AMSSM website: www.newamssm.org/Fellow.htm.

The application should contain the following supporting documents:

  • Three letters of recommendation from physicians who have supervised you in a clinical setting
  • Copies of the following documents: medical school diploma, certificate from all previous training locations, copy of present state medical licenses, and curriculum vitae.
