APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications will be accepted only from participants in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The department's residency programs (main, rural and urban) process applications to their programs somewhat differently. If you wish to apply to one or more of these programs, please indicate and highlight that information in your personal statement at the time you complete your application. Please also answer the additional questions specific to each program.
Invitations for personal interviews are based on review of the application materials requested. Interviews are scheduled on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays (some Tuesdays) mornings in November, December and January and include a tour of Carolinas Medical Center. Applicants are given ample opportunity to discuss the program with the faculty and residents. Each applicant is formally interviewed by a resident, and two faculty members, one of whom will be the residency director, who meets with each applicant to the program. Ranking in the NRMP is made on the basis of commitment to a career in family medicine, academic excellence, good communication skills and other factors. Second visits are not required, nor encouraged, but any applicant who wishes may return for an informal visit.
