CURRICULUM: YEAR 3

Two months are spent on the family practice inpatient service. Three or four half days per week are spent in the FPC throughout the year. The remaining ten months are divided among the following required rotations and electives. One month is spent as a supervising resident on a general internal medicine rotation. Another month of internal medicine is chosen from many subspecialty rotations. Ophthalmology, otolaryngology, urology and outpatient surgery are taught in specialists' offices during the family medicine months. Four months are available for electives. Popular electives include radiology, sports medicine, and various internal medicine and pediatric subspecialty rotations. Additional months of obstetrics training may be elected by residents planning to include obstetrics in their practices.

There is only one month of required in-house call every five nights as the supervising medicine resident. Call for family practice is spread over several months and is taken from home every fifth or sixth night.

A longitudinal curriculum brings all upper level residents together to do advanced study in areas that will prepare them for future practice. These areas include practice management, evidence-based medicine, behavioral medicine, community medicine and medicine and occupational medicine.
