CURRICULUM: YEAR 2

In August of year two, residents are together on an ambulatory skills month. The second-year resident also spends one month in the coronary care unit and one month in the adult intensive care unit under the supervision of cardiologists and intensivists, respectively. Two months are spent as a supervising resident on the general pediatric service. A month spent in each of geriatrics, gynecology, newborn nursery, orthopedics/sports medicine and Family Medicine Specialty Clinics are required, as well as two months in family practice inpatient service. Three half days per week during the remainder of the year are in the FPC, except when in intensive care units.

Residents take call five nights per month from home on family medicine and geriatrics, and take two to three nights from home on ambulatory skills, orthopedics, and newborn nursery. Night call in the coronary care and the intensive care units is every third to fourth night, but residents go home by mid-day after call. Call is every four to five nights on pediatrics.

In addition to the broader longitudinal curriculum, there is an innovative behavioral medicine experience woven in a longitudinal fashion through six of the 12 months of the second year.
