As the region's only Level 1 trauma center and tertiary referral center, Carolinas Medical Center is taking a lead role in developing comprehensive plans for responding to the health consequences of a natural or manmade disaster. Part of this mission will include the development of a multi-talented, comprehensive response team whose members will be trained in various aspects of disaster response and consequence management. The Hospital Disaster Response Team will participate in preparedness activities including mass patient decontamination, evacuation, transportation and alternate care facility mobilization and preparation.
To identify individuals interested in becoming part of a unique, newly formed and highly-trained task force.
Each potential candidate must be an employee in good standing within their department at Carolinas Medical Center or Carolinas Rehabilitation and have the support of their supervisor or manager. Applicants must be recognized as non-essential for direct patient care in the event of a disaster; because of this, nurses, physicians, security and Environmental Services staff are not eligible to participate. Applicants must have around the clock access to a pager or cell phone for notification purposes and willing to respond when activated. Members will be required to wear personal protective equipment while caring for patients in the event of a chemical or other hazardous materials incident.
If available at the time, each team member must be able to respond to Carolinas Medical Center or leave their work area in the event of a community-wide disaster to provide strategic, mission-oriented duties required to save lives and preserve infrastructure. Initial and annual training will be required to maintain competencies. Training sessions will be announced through Carolinas HealthCare System's Intranet, PeopleConnect.
Each team member will be recognized as a member of this unique and elite team. A specially designed pin will be provided that identifies each as a member of this team. Required training time will be compensated per hospital policy.
