For babies who need more critical services, Carolinas HealthCare System University is proud to offer a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Carolinas HealthCare System University's NICU is staffed by two neonatologists, specially trained neonatal nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, speech and physical therapists and other specialists, ensuring that these special babies and their families receive the care they need in a location close to home.
Our NICU cares for premature babies who are born as early as 28 weeks gestation as well as older babies who face special issues. Our caring staff monitors these at-risk babies to develop an individualized care plan, coordinating treatment for such medical concerns such as breathing problems, infections, blood sugar issues, fevers, or feeding problems.
Our Facility and Staff
Located within the Maternity Center*, the NICU is designed to offer comprehensive care for sick and premature infants. These tiny patients are monitored through advanced equipment and cared for by neonatal nurse practitioners around the clock. These registered nurses have received special training to care for sick newborns.
Neonatologists T. Arthur Payne, MD, and Carmen Villaveces, MD, oversee our neonates’ care, and are available seven days a week. These fellowship-trained pediatricians have completed additional training in the care of newborns and pre-term babies. Our physicians and all the specialists in your children's care provide state-of-the-art and compassionate care.
Parents can visit their newborns 24 hours a day. We ask that visiting be limited to parents and one additional visitor at a time.
