Maternity and Childcare Classes

CMC-University in Charlotte, NC offers a variety of education programs to help you prepare for labor, delivery and postpartum, as well as care for your new baby. We encourage you to begin classes no later than your 30th week of pregnancy to ensure finishing before your big day.

Available Classes

Childbirth Education Series

A childbirth series is a great way to prepare for labor and delivery. These 4 week sessions consist of lectures, discussion and exercises led by registered nurses who are also certified childbirth educators. The classes cover signs of labor, normal progress of labor and birth, techniques for coping with labor, including comfort measures, labor positions and epidurals. Your partner will learn ways to support you throughout labor. The class also includes a discussion on cesarean births and a tour of the maternity center. The last night of class is dedicated to Taking Care of Baby and Infant CPR.

Fast Track to Delivery Childbirth Class

This class is led by registered nurses who are also certified childbirth educators. This class is for those that don't have a lot of time but still want a childbirth class. It is a crash course where you will learn signs of labor, progress of labor and birth, pain medication options, and a brief discussion on comfort measures and cesarean birth. This class also includes a tour of the maternity center and allows you to pick a separate date for Taking Care of Baby/Infant CPR class at no additional fee.

Condensed Childbirth Education Series

This class is led by registered nurses who are also certified childbirth educators. This condensed class is for those that are unable to attend weekday classes. You will learn signs of labor, normal progress of labor and birth, techniques for coping with labor, including comfort measures, labor positions and epidurals. This class will also cover pushing techniques and cesarean birth. Your partner will learn ways to support you throughout labor. This class includes a tour of the maternity center and allows you to pick a separate date for Taking Care of Baby/Infant CPR at no additional fee.

Taking Care of Baby/Infant CPR Class

This class is included when you take the Childbirth Education Series, but is also available for those that do not take the Childbirth Education Series. This class teaches you baby basics, including everyday tasks such as diapering, holding the baby, feeding and burping, sleep behaviors, soothing the baby and signs and symptoms of illness during the infant period. The infant CPR portion is based on the American Heart Association's friends and family style class that teaches lay people emergency care for infant choking and newborn CPR techniques. This course will give you the knowledge you need to handle an emergency but, you will not be certified in CPR. This class is taught by registered nurses who are also certified American Heart Association instructors.

Breastfeeding Basics

Join our lactation consultants, and learn how breastfeeding works, how to establish a good milk supply, how to help your baby latch on for feeding, positioning for breastfeeding and knowing if your baby is getting enough milk. You will learn when and where to get help should you need it when you start breastfeeding your infant both here at the hospital and when you go home. Learning the basics of breastfeeding and starting off with a positive attitude will give you a better experience breastfeeding your baby.

Cost = $30; Free if you are taking the Childbirth Education Series, Fast Track to Delivery or Condensed Childbirth Education.

Back to Work: Breastfeeding Class

This class is designed for the woman before she goes back to work. Join our lactation consultants to learn more about the use of a breast pump, setting up a workable milk expression schedule, storing milk, maintaining a good milk supply and how to talk to your work colleagues and supervisors about your needs when returning to work.

Cost = $10 or FREE if you are taking the Breastfeeding Basics class, Childbirth Education Series, Fast Track to Delivery or Condensed Childbirth Education.

Boot Camp for New Dads

This popular program is presented by new dads and their babies for dads-to-be. They discuss and demonstrate real life experiences of what to expect when you take the baby home, newborn basics and dad's new role. The program builds confidence to face the challenges of fatherhood. For men only.

Boot Camp for New Dads is held every third Saturday from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

Maternity Adult Tour

This tour is designed for adults to answer all of your questions and give you the peace of mind you deserve for your special birth. The 45 minute tour walks you through our labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum single care private rooms and also answers your questions, from the admitting process and visiting hours, to family and infant security. You will receive a complete overview of our state-of-the-art facility which features all the comforts of home, with the most advanced technology, exceptional support services and experienced nursing staff.

Participants will meet in the main lobby of CMC-University. Cost = Free

I'm Going to Be a Big Brother/Big Sister Tour

This tour is designed to help the soon-to-be big brother and big sister get ready for your new baby. The sibling tour participants discuss what babies do, how the older sibling can help their parents and how important they are to the family. Siblings also learn and practice holding a baby using a doll, proper hand washing techniques, and what to expect with a new baby in a relaxed fun environment. Siblings walk through the maternity center where mom will have the baby and are presented with a special certificate. Parents must be present. This tour is designed for children ages 3 to 8 years old.

Cost = Free

Baby's First Massage

Tender Touch An Introduction to Baby’s First Massage

Infant massage is an expression of love for your baby through your nurturing touch. Massage helps your baby relax, sleep better and grow emotionally and physically. Join us when your baby is between newborn and four months to learn the art of infant massage. Other family members are welcome too!

Outpatient Lactation Center

Outpatient Lactation Services at CMC-University offers appointments for prenatal and postnatal breastfeeding assessments and counseling; mothers with increasing or decreasing milk supply; management of slow weight gains in infants; mothers breastfeeding twins or other multiples; mothers breastfeeding infants with neurological deficits or physical disabilities; mothers who wish to continue to breastfeeding upon return to work/school and much more.
