Faculty

Vanessa McPherson, MD Vanessa McPherson, MD, Program Director, grew up in a family of nine in Hickory, NC. She received her undergraduate education at UNC-Charlotte, and attended medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After completing her residency training at the University of South Carolina, she practiced in a small group practice in Belmont, NC, for several years where she served as a community preceptor for medical students and a guest preceptor at the residency's family medicine center. She joined the faculty in 2000 as the associate director of the Union program, and completed UNC's faculty development fellowship in 2002. She then transitioned to Charlotte where she served as the Program Director of the Main program in from 2003-2013. She completed the National Institute for Program Director Development in 2006 and co-founded Carolinas HealthCare System’s annual Senior Resident Leadership Skills Seminar. Dr. McPherson transitioned into the Program Director role at Union in April 2013.  Her interests include performing and teaching procedures, women's health, inpatient medicine, information technology and assisting residents in their professional development using feedback and self-reflection.
Jen Fernandez, MD Jen Fernandez, MD, Assistant Program Director, grew up in Highlands, N.C, and received her undergraduate education at the College of Charleston. She attended medical school at the Medical University of South Carolina and completed her family medicine residency at MAHEC, in Asheville, NC. After residency she worked as a hospitalist in Hendersonville, NC. She joined the faculty in August 2012 as the associate director of the Union program, and completed UNC's faculty development fellowship in 2013. She completed the National Institute for Program Director Development in 2014. Her professional interests include inpatient medicine, geriatrics, and women’s health. In her free time she enjoys traveling, cooking, and shopping.
Allison Bickett, MS

Allison Bickett, MS, is a doctoral candidate in clinical health psychology at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and presently serves as the Associate Director of Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Family Medicine within Carolinas HealthCare System. She splits her time between the residency programs at Elizabeth Family Medicine and Union Family Practice, where she assists in developing and teaching the Longitudinal Behavioral Medicine curriculum. She supports and evaluates residents in the advancement of their mental health knowledge and clinical interviewing skills, including motivational interviewing and active listening. Allison is interested in exploring the relationship between mental health and chronic disease, and presently serves as the Primary Investigator in a study examining the prevalence of, association between, and effective treatments for, anxiety and type 2 diabetes mellitus in a primary care setting.

Cordula Davis, MD Cordula Davis, MD, Core Faculty, grew up in Severn, MD as part of a military family. She received her undergraduate education at University of Maryland Baltimore County, and attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh. After completing her residency training at Carolinas Medical Center, she spent time in the physician float pool for CMC where she gained clinical experience in numerous ambulatory clinics across the system. She joined CMC-Union as junior faculty in 2013. Her interests include performing and teaching procedures, women’s health, family-centered maternity care, and inpatient medicine. In her free time she enjoys singing, songwriting, and traveling.
Donnie Nuzum, MD Donnie Nuzum, PharmD, joined Union Family Practice in 2005. Dr. Nuzum received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Texas at Arlington and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He completed his clinical pharmacy residencies in General Pharmacy Practice and Primary Care/Family Medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital and Health Sciences Center in Denver, CO. After completing his residency training, Dr. Nuzum accepted a faculty position at the newly established Wingate University School of Pharmacy in nearby Wingate, NC. Professional interests include patient education and management of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and dyslipidemia.
April Robinson, PharmD April Robinson, PharmD, joined Wingate University faculty in July of 2009. Dr. Robinson holds a faculty position at Wingate University of Pharmacy in nearby Wingate, NC, and provides in-hospital educational training for the residents as well as third and fourth year pharmacy students. She received her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Furman University and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She did her pharmacy practice residency in Greenville, SC. Professional interests include inpatient medicine.
Daniel Campo, MD Daniel Campo, MD, attended medical school at the University of Texas. He did his family medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center-Union. In his free time he enjoys training for triathlons, running, biking, and spending time with his wife and son.
Lindsey Johnson, MD, attended medical school at Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed her family medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center-Union. She is married and enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons. Her husband is a football coach and she enjoys going to his team's games in her free time.
Will Lester, MD, attended the University of Virginia and did his family medicine residency at Carolinas Medical Center. His professional interests include cardiovascular disease and orthopedic procedures. In his free time he enjoys biking.
Patil Shekar Skekhar Y. Patil, MD, attended Duke University for medical school and completed his family medicine residency at Pitt County Memorial ospital, in Greenville, NC. He is married and enjoys spending time with his wife and children.
Valencia Tellis, MD Valencia Tellis, MD, went to medical school at Michigan State University and did her residency at Genesys Regional Medical Center. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband and daughter.
John C. Vick, MD, attended medical school at the University of North Carolina and completed his residency at Carolinas Medical Center. He is involved in his church and also enjoys golf and community events. Professional interests including inpatient medicine and teaching.
