Cancer Treatment Options
Each patient's treatment plan will depend on the type, location and stage of their cancer. Although many cancers are treated with surgery, others may involve chemotherapy and radiation therapy. These treatments are directed by board-certified medical and radiation oncologists.
Chemotherapy treatment utilizes one or more medications to treat cancer and can be administered orally or intravenously, depending on the type of cancer. Patients receive chemotherapy at Carolinas Cancer Associates located in the CMC-Union medical office building, which features comfortable recliners, head phones and televisions. Specially trained oncology nurses are on staff to administer chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy Services
Radiation therapy is administered under the direction of a board-certified radiation oncologist utilizing the latest technology. This includes 3-D treatment planning, along with sophisticated diagnostic imaging procedures. Radiation therapy is delivered through a state-of-the-art linear accelerator. Modern techniques are used to minimize the damage to normal tissue. Radiation may be used prior to surgery to shrink a tumor or after surgery to prevent the growth of remaining cancer cells. The Center also utilizes Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) as part of its comprehensive treatment services.
