Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) is excited to offer year round volunteer opportunities to high school students ages 14-18. Volunteer Services looks for mature, self-driven, dependable teens who are seeking to serve the patients, families and staff members of Carolinas Medical Center.
To obtain an application to become a volunteer, students and one parent must attend a 45 minute pre-application meeting. This meeting outlines the various volunteer positions offered, the volunteer program's commitment requirements and what you can expect from the volunteer application process. Applications are handed out at the end of this meeting.
The application process consists of completing and returning the application to the Volunteer Services Department. Each application requires two adult references (non-family members) and background disclosure verification. The Volunteer Department does require background checks on all volunteers that want to help in the hospital.
The Volunteer Department will call to schedule an interview once both references have responded. At this point, the volunteer candidate and the Volunteer Coordinator will discuss volunteer availability and interests. Decisions will be made based on departmental requests. If selected, the volunteer must attend an orientation prior to volunteering in Levine Children's Hospital. The orientation is roughly three hours long and provides information volunteers need to know in order to safely provide service in a hospital setting.
Volunteers will also be required to receive health clearance from the Employee Health Department. Students will be required to present a copy of their vaccinations, a health history form, and documentation of the first of two TB skin tests before clearance will be given. At least two weeks after the first TB test, the volunteer will need to return and have a second TB test performed.
Volunteers are required to be available on a weekly basis. There are four sessions each year and schedule requirements are disclosed on the application and verified at the time of the interview. Failure to meet these requirements will inhibit participation in future volunteer programs within Carolinas Healthcare System. Session dates appear below. Please be aware that there are limited positions available. Not all applicants are offered positions.
If you would like to sign up for the next pre-application meeting, please contact Volunteer Services or call 704-355-2105.
