Ultrasound

Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) Radiology Service operates well over 30 Ultrasound devices throughout Mecklenburg County. The preferred location for research activities is CMC due to its access to support resources. Scanners are available in both hospital and outpatient settings.

Carolinas Medical Center maintains technology leadership with a uniform operating platform that maintains consistency throughout our system. There are more than 30 ultrasound devices operating within Mecklenburg County, nine of which are on the CMC main campus. Ultrasound guided interventional procedures, as well as portable services, are offered by CMC. The Ultrasound section is an ACR accredited service with both general and vascular capabilities.

Carolinas Medical Center provides anesthesia-supported Ultrasound procedures if needed. Ultrasound Scanners within Mecklenburg County have supported a significant number of clinical research protocols. Animal and cadaver studies can be provided with advance notice and planning through radiology management.Carolinas Medical Center - Charlotte facilities maintain an outstanding, experienced staff of Ultrasound technologists. Charlotte Radiology provides sub-specialty expertise for Ultrasound imaging in support of research protocols.

Initiating a Research Protocol Requiring Ultrasound

Research Coordinators (RCs) or Principal Investigators should contact Radiology Administration to obtain budgetary pricing for the service. Budget information for both CMC and Charlotte Radiology can be facilitated through the CMC Radiology Administration office. This office will also direct the RC to the appropriate technical resource within radiology to discuss the specifics of the protocol requirements. A specific radiologist, if needed, will also be notified at that time.

Ultrasound Operational Hours

Carolinas Medical Center provides outpatient services 7 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday-Friday and maintains staffing 24 hours a day, seven days a week. On-call technologists are available at other hospital locations.
