CMC-NorthEast Internal & Integrative Medicine combines the best practices of complementary and conventional medicine to maximize the body's innate potential for self-healing. We offer evidence-based holistic treatments designed to complement traditional care. As a result, patients recover faster and are more comfortable when undergoing or recovering from medical procedures.
What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine means bringing together modern and complementary healing and health practices, so the patient benefits from both approaches. This care model addresses the whole person: body, mind and spirit. The Integrative Medicine & Wellness program at CMC-NorthEast provides services with preventive and diagnostic strategies for both acute and chronic illness.
Experts in Integrative Medicine
Our physicians have training in both conventional and integrative medicine and are devoted to fostering care between these diverse fields. Our Integrative & Wellness team at CMC-NorthEast consists of an integrative medicine medical director, an integrative nurse specialist, acupuncturist, massage therapist, integrative chaplain and an integrative volunteer. We work with you to create an individualized treatment and lifestyle plan.
Research studies show that complementary and holistic therapies can help patients with many conditions including:
- Stress and anxiety
- Sleep concerns
Aromatherapy is a common component used in integrative medicine and is used for therapeutic purposes. Volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, are used in two ways; as an aroma when inhaled and topically through the skin when applied in conjunction with massage.
Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine
Acupuncture is the gentle insertion of very fine, disposable sterile needles at specific points on the body. This process stimulates movement of energy within the body, allowing healing to take place. Acupressure is a derivative of acupuncture that uses pressure from fingers or thumbs on acupuncture points to promote healing and does not include the use of needles.
Biofeedback is a mind-body technique that helps people control heart rate, blood pressure, skin temperature and muscle tension for stress reduction and healing. Studies show biofeedback benefits for a variety of medical conditions including anxiety, asthma, chronic pain and migraine and tension headaches.
Breathing techniques are used to teach a variety of breathing patterns that help improve physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Combined with calming and empowering mind-body exercises, breathing techniques can decrease anxiety and pain to enhance sleep and aid in healing.
Counterstrain involves the gentle movement of an affected body part to a position of ease that relieves the muscle's strain or spasm by shortening the muscle.
Reiki and Healing Touch are safe, gentle and non-invasive forms of energy medicine and natural hands-on healing. These therapies work with your body's natural energy to support healing and promote a deep sense of relaxation. During a Reiki or Healing Touch session, the practitioner places her/his hands on or near your body. You may experience the energy as a pleasant sensation that moves through your body. Some people enter a deeply relaxed state. No disrobing is necessary to receive this therapy.
Guided visualization is a gentle technique that directs the imagination and all five senses to promote relaxation and reduce anxiety and pain. Integrative Medicine & Wellness offers individualized guided imagery sessions at the bedside. Guided imagery services are available on inpatient TV Relaxation Channel #32, along with soothing photos and music.
Medical hypnosis teaches patients to use deep relaxation to help with pain, anxiety, nausea or other symptoms.
Medical Massage therapy is a form of manual therapy using touch and tissue manipulation. Our licensed massage therapists are trained in a variety of medical massage therapies including oncologic massage and lymphatic drainage.
Music and Art
Music and art interventions help patients and families better cope with illness and hospitalization. Research shows that music can help reduce pain, stress and anxiety, as well as relieve nausea.
