Stroke Services at CMC-Neurology

Our Stroke Center offers effective protocols for rapid treatment and management of stroke and cerebrovascular disease. Our center provides a comprehensive, team-oriented approach to patient care that includes physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, a social worker, counseling for depression/anxiety, a dietitian and an exercise consultant. Our multidisciplinary approach to patient care integrates all services, allowing us to provide each individual with a care plan tailored to their specific needs. The Stroke Center also offers 24-7 emergency capabilities including interventional therapies and tissue plasminogen activator.

Phaniraj Iyengar, MD is the Medical Director for Carolinas Comprehensive Stroke Center.

Steve W. Dibert, MD, Jerry Martin, MD, Kenneth Shauger, MD, and J. Scott Story, MD, evaluate and treat all stroke patients in a learning environment that promotes clinical and basic science research.

Services available at the Stroke Center include:
  • Acute and chronic stroke management
  • 24-hour emergent stroke treatment
  • tPA - tissue plasminogen activator
  • Interventional therapies including angioplasty, stent placement, merci retrieval device and penumbra instrumentation
  • Care for patients who have had a stroke due to thrombosis or embolism

CMC is part of the Carolinas Stroke Network, a comprehensive network that provides rapid, state-of-the-art treatment to patients suffering an acute stroke. Similar to the treatment for heart attack, the more quickly emergency care can be provided to some stroke patients, the better the outcome. For more information, visit the website.

Clinical trials may be available for stoke patients - search the trials database.

Carolinas Medical Center Receives Gold Stroke Recognition.

2013 Get with the Guidelines - StrokeThe American Heart Association's recognition program provides hospitals with the opportunity to improve their compliance with science based guidelines and the ability to be bench marked with facilities of like size and mission.

CMC has obtained the second highest performance achievement award for advanced stroke care that is available from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. Only the Gold Plus achievement award which requires compliance in five quality measures ranks higher than this award. This means the CMC team has provided not only exceptional acute stroke care, but has also been able to maintain it over time. This award reflects 24 consecutive months of compliance at a level of 85 percent or higher.

On behalf of the AHA/ASA, Carolinas Medical Center and its exceptional neuroscience staff members are to be commended.
