Molecular Pathology

Carolinas Laboratory Network is a leader in the highly specialized area of molecular pathology. Molecular pathology applies the principles, theory, and technologies of molecular biology to clinical medicine. This specialized section of the Carolinas Laboratory Network provides testing and consultation in all areas of molecular diagnostics including genetics, infectious disease and oncology.

By detecting unique DNA or RNA sequences associated with a disease or infectious agent, molecular analysis yields specific information that impacts clinical care decisions. Molecular laboratory testing allows physicians to monitor viral infections and to assess if a patient is responding to antiviral drug therapy. With DNA technology, physicians are able to test oncology patients to determine their type of cancer, the number of cancer cells in their body during chemotherapy and how remission is progressing. Additionally, DNA-based analysis allows testing for genetic alterations associated with inherited disorders. This information plays a crucial role in genetic counseling and interventional medicine.

Currently the molecular pathology laboratory offers testing for the following:

  • Angelman syndrome
  • B cell rearrangement
  • BK viral load by Real Time PCR
  • BCL2
  • BCR/ABL quantitative
  • CMV viral load by Real Time PCR
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Cystic fibrosis 5T analysis
  • Enterovirus by Real Time PCR
  • Factor V Leiden
  • Fragile X syndrome
  • HBV viral load by real-time PCR
  • HCV viral load by real-time PCR
  • Hemochromatosis
  • HIV Quantitative by PCR
  • HIV Ultrasensitive by PCR
  • HSV 1 / 2 by Real Time PCR
  • Human papilloma virus (HPV)
  • MTHFR
  • Prader-Willi syndrome
  • Prothrombin 20210A
  • T cell rearrangement
