Microbiology is staffed by medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians and clinical laboratory assistants who perform over 500,000 tests per year. This area includes the subspecialties of bacteriology, virology, TB/ mycology and special microbiology.
Bacteriology offers a full range of routine and specialized tests such as gram stains, definitive identifications and susceptibilities using MicroScan TM Walkaway. The BactecTM instrument, a continuous monitoring blood culture system, also allows for notification of positive blood cultures 24 hours a day.
Microbiologists and virologists identify bacterial, viral and fungal infections, as well as autoimmune diseases through manual and automated serological methods plus cultures. Rheumatoid arthritis, syphilis and antinuclear antibodies are among the serological tests offered in this section. A full range of hepatitis and HIV testing on automated platforms is also available. In virology, identification of viral infections such as Herpes Simplex Virus, Respiratory Syncytial Virus and Influenza A/B are accomplished through cultures and direct fluorescent antibody techniques.
The TB/ mycology lab is equipped to provide a 24-hour turnaround time for preliminary identification of acid fast bacilli. In addition, in-house fungal identifications and susceptibilities are performed.
Board-certified pathologists from Carolinas Pathology Group and doctoral level specialists serve as the networks on-site medical directors.
