The histology department provides pathology services. Histology and pathology are terms used to describe the study of normal and abnormal tissue. Tissue specimens from CMC, CMC-Mercy, CMC-Pineville, CMC-University and over 100 physician's offices are processed, embedded and cut by a histotechnologist in the Histology department. The sections are mounted on slides and stained for identification by a pathologist. The histology laboratory processes specimens for routine pathologic examination as well as specimens requiring more advanced testing including immunohistochemistry (IHC), complex special stains, immunofluorescence and enzyme histochemistry. Pathology reports are printed or faxed, usually within 48 hours of specimen receipt.
