Research repeatedly shows that minimally invasive surgery reduces complications and shortens healing time. That's why Carolinas Medical Center, part of Carolinas HealthCare System, offers CLASP - Carolinas Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgery Program. CLASP was founded at Carolinas Medical Center in 1998 and focuses on three main pillars of activity: Patient Care, Research, and Education.
CLASP combines talented medical professionals and minimally invasive surgical techniques to improve the outcome of patients with disorders of the intestine, spine, solid organs, heart and others. The program is nationally recognized and is committed to patient care, quality research, measurement of clinical and economic outcomes and promotion of education. We pioneer new surgical techniques in minimally invasive surgery, along with ground-breaking studies and education methods.
In an effort to better evaluate and track the quality-of-life (QOL) for patients undergoing hernia surgery, CLASP physicians developed and patented the Carolinas Comfort Scale® (CCS) - an assessment now being used all over the world.
Our CLASP surgeons, recipients of numerous prestigious awards, have literally written the book on minimally invasive surgery. In fact, physicians who want to specialize in these techniques come to us for mentoring and advanced training. Our surgeons have taught more than 2000 physicians in the United States and around the world. By pioneering new techniques and studying the best educational methods, CLASP continues to offer cutting-edge courses that benefit both patients and the medical community.
