Michael Tarwater, CEO Michael C. Tarwater, MHA
Chief Executive Officer
For more than 30 years, Mr. Tarwater has been a leader in the development of Carolinas HealthCare System, the largest, vertically integrated healthcare system in North and South Carolina. Carolinas HealthCare System is comprised of 60,000+ employees located in more than 900 care locations throughout the Carolinas and Georgia, with a forecasted 2013 net revenue of $7.8 billion. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1981, Mr. Tarwater served as the assistant administrator at the University of Alabama Hospitals. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of West Florida and a Master of Science degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Mr. Tarwater is a life member and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Hospital Association. He is a member of the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Board of Trustees, and serves as Chairman of the AHA Regional Policy Board 3. He serves on the Board of Trustees of Queens University of Charlotte and on numerous other community oriented boards, and he is Vice Chairman of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce.

Joesph Piemont Joseph G. Piemont
President - Chief Operating Officer
As the President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Piemont oversees all of the major clinical and operational areas at Carolinas HealthCare System, currently comprised of 41 community, acute care, and specialty hospitals including several academic medical centers. The System also includes a network of rural and suburban healthcare pavilions and surgical and rehabilitation centers, home health agencies, nursing homes, hospices and palliative care centers, and integrated physician practices, totaling close to 900 care locations. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1997, Mr. Piemont was President and Chief Executive Officer of Coastal Physicians Group, Inc., a then publicly-traded company formerly located in Durham, North Carolina, and was General Counsel for AMRESCO, Inc. in Dallas, Texas. He received an Economics degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and holds a Juris Doctor degree from Emory University School of Law.

Paul S. Franz Paul S. Franz, MHA
Executive Vice President - Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group
As Executive Vice President of the Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group, Mr. Franz is responsible for the management and direction of integrated physician organizations of more than 2,300 employed physicians and providers, including Carolinas Physicians Network, Faculty Physicians Network and NorthEast Physicians Network. He oversees medical education, trauma, transplant, and research, including Centers of Excellence like the Carolinas Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgery Programs. Mr. Franz also has service line management responsibility for Levine Cancer Institute and Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute. Mr. Franz joined Carolinas HealthCare System in 1983 and has held progressive responsibilities in the Acute Care Hospital Divisions including serving as President of Carolinas Medical Center and Executive Vice President for Hospital Operations for Carolinas HealthCare System. Mr. Franz became Executive Vice President for the Physicians Services Group (now Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group) in 2007. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1983, Mr. Franz held the position of Assistant Vice President of professional services at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Allegheny College and a Master of Health administration degree from Duke University.

Greg Gombar Greg A. Gombar, BA, CPA
Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
As the Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, Mr. Gombar is the senior executive responsible for overseeing the System’s financial operations and government relations. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1984, Mr. Gombar served as an Audit Manager and Healthcare Consultant with Arthur Andersen LLP for seven years. He received a Bachelor of Arts in accounting and management science from Duke University and is a certified public accountant (CPA). Currently, Mr. Gombar is a member of the Health Management Academy, North Carolina Association of CPAs, and Healthcare Financial Management Association, and he is actively involved with the North Carolina Hospital Association.

Laurence Hinsdale Laurence C. Hinsdale
Executive Vice President - Regional Group
As Executive Vice President of the Regional Group, Mr. Hinsdale directs the strategic development and operating activities of Carolinas HealthCare System’s Regional Facilities including AnMed Health, Blue Ridge HealthCare System, Cleveland Regional Healthcare System, Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Cone Health, Kings Mountain Hospital, MedWest Health System, Murphy Medical Center, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Scotland Health Care System, St. Luke’s Health Care, Stanly Regional Medical Center, and Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Mr. Hinsdale came to Carolinas HealthCare System in 2007 in connection with the System’s merger with NorthEast Medical Center, where he served as Chief Executive Officer since 1998. Prior to joining NorthEast, Mr. Hinsdale served as Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Center at Bowling Green. Since 1982, Mr. Hinsdale has held various healthcare positions in both for-profit and non-profit hospitals in Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee and South Carolina. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978, and his Master’s degree in Health Administration from Duke University in 1982.

John Knox, III John J. Knox, III, MHA
Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer
As Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Knox is responsible for the Corporate Operations Divisions within Carolinas HealthCare System. This includes areas such as information services, construction, real estate, security, dietary, environmental services, plant operations and maintenance, architecture, materials resource management, transcription, clinical engineering, imaging/radiology services, pharmacies, and the Carolinas Laboratory Network. Mr. Knox also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Carolinas Shared Services, which is Carolinas HealthCare System’s Group Purchasing Organization. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1996, Mr. Knox was a senior executive with Andersen Consulting, focusing exclusively on healthcare industry information technology, strategic planning and business processes improvement. Mr. Knox was a practicing Occupational Therapist for several years. Mr. Knox holds Bachelor of Science degrees in Psychology and in Occupational Therapy and a Master’s degree in Hospital and Health Services Administration from The Ohio State University.

Carol A. Lovin
Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer
Carol Lovin is Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer of the Carolinas HealthCare System Management Company. She is responsible for leading the organization’s planning and development, performance enhancement, analytics, and communications/marketing functions. In this role, from a planning and development perspective, she provides oversight for strategic, service line, market, business unit, regulatory, and capital planning, long-term utilization forecasting, and business case development for new programs and services. Her performance enhancement responsibilities include Lean/Six Sigma, labor management, project management, new partner on-boarding, plans for operational performance and efficiency optimization, and Carolinas Operational Benchmarking teams. As part of her Management Company responsibilities, Ms. Lovin has coordinated and co-leads Carolinas HealthCare System’s innovation work. Additionally, in 2012, she assumed responsibility for the development of a data analytics group, Dickson Advanced Analytics, which leads performance and predictive advanced analytics for the enterprise. It predicts health needs, elevates patient outcomes, and drives transformative healthcare solutions. Her communications, marketing, and outreach responsibilities include senior oversight for the development, communication, and protection of the Carolinas HealthCare System brand, the development and execution of integrated communications/marketing plans, public relations, internal communications, enterprise relations, and digital marketing. Ms. Lovin joined Carolinas HealthCare System with the NorthEast Medical Center merger in July 2007. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, a Master’s degree in Nursing as a nurse practitioner from the University of Washington, and a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Michigan.

Debra Plousha Moore
Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer 
As Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer, Ms. Plousha Moore directs talent acquisition, workforce relations, compensation and benefits, education, organizational and leadership development, employee health, and Carolinas HealthCare System LiveWELL, a health and wellness program for the Carolinas HealthCare System workforce. Prior to joining the System in 2008, Ms. Plousha Moore held the position of Senior Vice President of Human Resources/Organizational Development for OhioHealth, where she guided the organization to the list of FORTUNE Magazine’s 100 Best Companies to Work For. She was recognized by Columbus CEO Magazine as a “management superstar” in the area of human resources. Ms. Plousha Moore also held the positions of Vice President of Human Resources and Organizational Development at Genesys Health System in Grand Blanc, Michigan, and Regional Vice President of Employee Relations, Diversity and Human Resources at Franciscan Health System of the Ohio Valley. She holds a Master of Science in Education from the University of Dayton.

Dennis Phillips Dennis J. Phillips
Executive Vice President - Metro Group
As Executive Vice President of the Metro Group, Mr. Phillips has responsibility for planning, development and operations of the greater Charlotte-Metropolitan service area, including the acute care facilities (Carolinas Medical Center, Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast, Carolinas Medical Center-University, Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville, Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy, Carolinas Medical Center-Union, Carolinas Medical Center-Lincoln and Anson Community Hospital), specialty hospitals (Levine Children’s Hospital, Carolinas Rehabilitation and Carolinas Rehabilitation-Mount Holly), radiology and the post-acute care division of the System including, Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home, Sardis Oaks Nursing Home, Home Health Services and Home Infusion and Durable Medical Equipment. Mr. Phillips has been in healthcare management for 36 years. He has an undergraduate degree in Accounting from Virginia Tech and a Master’s degree in Hospital and Health Administration from Medical College of Virginia. Mr. Phillips served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, North Carolina for 18 years prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in November 2004.

Dr. Roger Ray Roger A. Ray, MD
Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Roger Ray serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Carolinas HealthCare System. Dr. Ray is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction related to performance improvement in quality and patient safety as well as System-wide clinical integration. Further, Dr. Ray assumes operational responsibility within the Charlotte Market facilities for quality management, clinical care management, medical staff services, infection control, health information management, accreditation services and behavioral health services. He also has assumed responsibility for system care coordination, mobile medicine and the Chief Medical Officers throughout the Charlotte region. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2007, Dr. Ray served as the Chief Quality Officer for BayCare Health System, an integrated, multi-hospital system in Tampa, Florida. His prior physician executive roles included Chief Medical Officer for Morton Plant Mease Healthcare in Clearwater, Florida and Chief Medical Officer for AnMed Health System in Anderson, South Carolina. Dr. Ray received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his Medical degree from West Virginia University. He also received a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Colorado. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the Certifying Commission in Medical Management. Dr. Ray practiced clinical neurology for 10 years prior to taking on his administrative roles. Top
Connie C. Bonebrake Connie C. Bonebrake, MSW, LHNA
Senior Vice President and Chief Patient Experience Officer
As Senior Vice President and Chief Patient Experience Officer, Ms. Bonebrake is responsible for the strategic deployment of differentiable customer service in support of an enduring relationship with patients across the continuum of care. Prior to being appointed as Chief Patient Experience Officer, Ms. Bonebrake served as Senior Vice President of Post-Acute Care Services with responsibility for Home Health, Palliative Care, Hospice and Skilled Facility Operations. Ms. Bonebrake has been in healthcare management for over 25 years. As a licensed nursing home administrator, she joined Carolinas HealthCare System as the Executive Director of Sardis Oaks in November 1998. She has an undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and a Master’s degree in Social Work, with a concentration in aging, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mary N. Hall, MD, FAAFP
Chief Academic Officer
As Chief Academic Officer for Carolinas HealthCare System, Dr. Hall is responsible for the organization’s academic programs, including undergraduate and graduate medical education, nursing and allied health programs, continuing medical education and advanced clinical practitioner fellowships. She oversees the Center for Advanced Practice, Carolinas College of Health Sciences, Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, Mercy School of Nursing and the Charlotte Campus of the UNC School of Medicine. Dr. Hall joined Carolinas HealthCare System in 1987 as the Director of Medical Student programs in the Department of Family Medicine. She was Chair of Family Medicine for eight years and held a number of other positions, including director of medical student education, medical director of the Family Medicine Center and program director of the Family Medicine residency program. Dr. Hall is the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s designated institutional official, the director of Charlotte Area Health Education Center and a professor of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She also is past president of the American Balint Society and current chair of the national Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Council. She sits on the Board of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, a group for which she recently was nominated to serve as president elect. Dr. Hall received her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York in Binghamton and her Medical degree from Cornell University Medical College.  She completed her residency in family medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC and fellowships in faculty development at MUSC and at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Sara J. Herron, RN, MPH, CHC
Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer
Ms. Herron is the Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance and Privacy Officer for Carolinas HealthCare System with primary responsibility for the System’s compliance and privacy programs. She also provides guidance and interpretation for governmental regulations including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services coding and billing rules. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2003, Mrs. Herron held management positions in hospital operations at Catawba Valley Medical Center for over 17 years which included responsibility for clinical case management, care pathway development, medical record coding, quality monitoring and related information systems programs. She is a registered nurse with a Bachelor’s degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University and a Master’s degree in Health Policy and Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a national certification in Healthcare Compliance and has served on several regional and national Medicare advisory workgroups.

Craig D. Richardville
Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer 
Mr. Richardville is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer and has overall System responsibility for information services and strategy. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1997, Mr. Richardville held a variety of administrative positions with ProMedica Health System for 12 years.
Mr. Richardville is a fellow with the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society; board chair for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte College of Computing and Informatics; board member of Healthy@Home, CareConnect Carolinas, and Carolinas Shared Services; and member of College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, American College of Healthcare Executives and Health Management Academy. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor’s degree in System Analysis.

Michael L. Rose, CFRE
President - Carolinas HealthCare Foundation
Mr. Rose joined Carolinas HealthCare System as the executive officer of Carolinas HealthCare Foundation in 1987. He has more than 38 years of successful and diverse institutional advancement and fundraising experience. He also serves as Chair of the Carolinas HealthCare System Partnerships Program overseeing corporate giving and sponsorships. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System, Mr. Rose served as Senior Vice President, Baptist Health Care Foundation and Baptist Health Care Corporation, Montgomery, Alabama. Previous professional associations include Baptist Medical Centers, Birmingham, Alabama, Alabama Sight Conservation Association, Birmingham, Alabama and the University of Mobile, Mobile, Alabama. A graduate of Mississippi College, Mr. Rose holds graduate credentials with emphasis in Counseling and Gerontology. He has maintained credentials as a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) in association with CFRE International since 1983. Mr. Rose is active in the Charlotte community serving on the Board of Directors of the Council for Children’s Rights, and as Co-Chair of The Larry King Center. He is an advisory member of the Leon Levine Foundation Board of Directors.

Keith A. Smith
Senior Vice President and General Counsel
Mr. Smith is the Senior Vice President and legal executive of Carolinas HealthCare System with primary responsibility for managing the System’s legal affairs. Mr. Smith also provides guidance in the areas of corporate governance, corporate law and healthcare regulatory issues.
Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1997, Mr. Smith was in private practice with the law firm of Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A. Mr. Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Duke University and a Juris Doctor degree from Duke University School of Law.

Robert H. Wiggins, CPA
Senior Vice President - Finance
Mr. Wiggins has primary responsibility for all financial accounting and reporting for Carolinas HealthCare System. In addition, he oversees governmental payer matters and Carolinas HealthCare System’s Treasury function, including financing transactions, investments, and investor relations. Mr. Wiggins came to Carolinas HealthCare System in 1987 and has over 26 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to 1987, Mr. Wiggins spent six years in public accounting and served primarily healthcare clients. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business, with a concentration in accounting, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a certified public accountant.

Mary Ann Wilcox, MS, RNC, NEA-BC
Senior Vice President - System Nurse Executive
Mary Ann Wilcox joined Carolinas HealthCare System in March 2011 as Senior Vice President, System Nurse Executive. Bringing over 30 years of nursing experience to her role, Ms. Wilcox represents over 14,000 nurses throughout our System to ensure consistency in nursing policy, strategy, practice and quality. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System, Ms. Wilcox held the position of Senior Vice President and System Chief Nursing Officer at WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, North Carolina. She spent 18 years at OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio. As the Chief Nursing Officer at Riverside Methodist Hospital, the flagship of the OhioHealth System, she led the organization to achieve Magnet recognition. Ms. Wilcox serves as a local, regional, and national representative for Carolinas HealthCare System through participation in key nursing quality and professional groups. She is an active member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the North Carolinas Organization of Nurse Leaders and the North Carolina Nurses Association. She has been recognized as a "Great 100 Nurse" of North Carolina and is the recipient of the 2010 Ohio State University College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award. Ms. Wilcox holds a baccalaureate in Nursing from St. Xavier University in Chicago and a Master's degree in Nursing from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.  Top
Phyllis Wingate
Division President - Northern Group
As Division President of the Northern Group and President of Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast, Ms. Wingate oversees a 457-inpatient-bed, Level III Trauma Center. She is also responsible for Carolinas Medical Center-University, a 130-bed, full-service community acute care hospital. Prior to joining Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast, Ms. Wingate served as President of Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy for three years. She was responsible for the 196-bed facility as well as Carolinas Medical Center-Randolph. She established the first intensivist program at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy and achieved a number of operational improvements, including top quartile physician and employee satisfaction. Ms. Wingate is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in physical therapy She also received a Master’s degree in Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. A fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, she is active in the American Hospital Association, the North Carolina Hospital Association, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Physical Therapy Advisory Board, Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation, Cabarrus Health Alliance, Cabarrus Arts Council, and numerous other civic and professional organizations.

Zachary Zapack, Sr Vice President - Facilities Management Group Zachary J. Zapack, M Arch
Senior Vice President - Facilities Management Group
Mr. Zapack is responsible for the Facilities Management Group of Carolinas HealthCare System. The Facilities Management Group includes real estate services, project and construction management, plant operations and maintenance, environmental services, security, parking, food and nutrition services and corporate safety. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1982 as the Chief Hospital Architect, Mr. Zapack was employed as a Healthcare Project Manager for five years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in pre-architecture and a Master of Architecture degree from Clemson University. Mr. Zapack is currently an architect in North Carolina. He has been licensed as a general contractor and a real estate broker in North Carolina.
