Michael Tarwater, CEO

Michael C. Tarwater, M.H.A.

President and Chief Executive Officer

For almost 35 years, Michael Tarwater has been a leader in the development of Carolinas HealthCare System – the largest vertically integrated healthcare system in North and South Carolina. The System is comprised of more 60,000 employees in over 900 care locations throughout the Carolinas and Georgia, with a total enterprise net revenue in excess of $8 billion.

Before joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1981, Tarwater served as assistant administrator at the University of Alabama Hospital. He holds a Bachelor of Science in business administration from the University of West Florida and a Master of Science in hospital and health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. A founding member of the Charlotte Executive Leadership Council, he is a life member and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Hospital Association and the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce. He previously served on the American Hospital Association’s (AHA) Board of Trustees and was chairman of the AHA Regional Policy Board 3. He is currently chair elect of the Board of Trustees of Queens University of Charlotte and serves on numerous community boards.

Paul S. Franz

Paul S. Franz, M.H.A.

Executive Vice President – Regional Group

Paul Franz directs the strategic development and operating activities of Carolinas HealthCare System’s regional facilities, including AnMed Health, Cannon Memorial Hospital, Carolinas HealthCare System Blue Ridge, Columbus Regional Healthcare System, Cone Health, Elbert Memorial Hospital, Murphy Medical Center, Roper St. Francis Healthcare, Scotland Health Care System, St. Luke’s Health Care and Wilkes Regional Medical Center.

Since joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1983, Franz has served as president of Carolinas Medical Center and executive vice president of hospital operations for the System. He became executive vice president for the Physicians Services Group (now Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group) in 2007. Before joining Carolinas HealthCare System, Franz was assistant vice president of professional services at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Ill. He received a Bachelor of Science in economics from Allegheny College and a Master of Health Administration from Duke University.

Greg Gombar

Greg A. Gombar, B.A., C.P.A.

Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Greg Gombar is the senior executive responsible for overseeing Carolina HealthCare System’s financial operations and government relations.

Gombar joined Carolinas HealthCare System in 1984 as the controller, overseeing accounting and business reporting, and became the CFO in 1985. Before joining the System, Gombar served as an audit manager and healthcare consultant with Arthur Andersen LLP for seven years. He received a Bachelor of Arts in accounting and management science from Duke University and is a certified public accountant. Currently, Gombar is a member of the Health Management Academy, North Carolina Association of CPAs and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He is also actively involved with the North Carolina Hospital Association.

John Knox, III

John J. Knox, III, M.H.A.

Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer

John Knox is responsible for the corporate operations divisions within Carolinas HealthCare System. This includes information services, construction, real estate, security, dietary, environmental services, plant operations and maintenance, architecture, materials resource management, transcription, clinical engineering, health information management and coding, LEAN/performance enhancement, imaging/radiology services, pharmacies and the Carolinas Laboratory Network. He also serves as the chief executive officer of Carolinas Shared Services, which is Carolinas HealthCare System’s group purchasing organization.

Before joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1996, Knox was a senior executive with Accenture, focusing exclusively on healthcare industry information technology, strategic planning and business process improvement. He was a practicing occupational therapist for several years. Knox holds Bachelor of Science degrees in psychology and occupational therapy, as well as a master’s degree in hospital and health services administration from Ohio State University. He currently serves on the boards of Premier and The Greater Enrichment Program.

Carol A. Lovin

Carol A. Lovin, M.H.S.A., M.N.

Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer

Carol Lovin is responsible for leading strategy development and deployment for Carolinas HealthCare System. Her strategic services division is comprised of four teams: the CHS Management Company – an internal consulting team that coordinates strategy, planning and development, and performance enhancement; Corporate Communications, Marketing & Outreach – responsible for the advancement and protection of the Carolinas HealthCare System brand, internal and external communications, as well as community relations; DA2 – an advanced analytics group delivering descriptive, predictive and prescriptive analytics; and Innovation Engine – a design and prototyping team for business and clinical innovation.

Since joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2007, Lovin has served as executive vice president of planning and communications, president of the CHS Management Company, and vice president of strategic planning and market development at Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast. She holds a Bachelor of Science in nursing and a master’s degree in nursing as a nurse practitioner from the University of Washington, as well as a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Michigan. She currently serves on the boards of Charlotte Center City Partners, Charlotte Regional Partnership and the Charlotte Chamber, as well as the Executive Advisory Board for Data Sciences at UNC Charlotte.

Debra Plousha Moore, M.S.E.

Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer

Debra Plousha Moore directs recruitment and employment, compensation, benefits, workforce relations, education, diversity and inclusion, organizational development, teammate health and CHS LiveWELL (the teammate health and wellness program) for Carolinas HealthCare System.

Before joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2008, Plousha Moore was senior vice president of human resources and organizational development for OhioHealth, where she guided the organization to the list of FORTUNE Magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For.” She also held the positions of vice president of human resources and organizational development at Genesys Health System in Grand Blanc, Mich., and regional vice president of employee relations, diversity and human resources at Franciscan Health System of the Ohio Valley.

A graduate of San Francisco State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree, she earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Dayton. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and the National Association of Health Services Executives. In addition to serving on the 2016 Executive Committee of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, Plousha Moore serves on numerous boards.

Dennis Phillips

Dennis J. Phillips, M.H.A.

Executive Vice President – Metro Group

Dennis Phillips is responsible for planning, development and operations for Carolinas HealthCare System’s 18 Charlotte Metro-area acute care facilities and specialty hospitals, including Carolinas Medical Center, Levine Children’s Hospital and the four Carolinas Rehabilitation inpatient hospitals, as well as the System’s Continuing Care division, which includes skilled nursing facilities, long-term acute care hospitals, Healthy@Home services, and hospice and palliative care.

Phillips has been in healthcare management for 40 years. Before joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2004, he served for 19 years as president and chief executive officer of Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, N.C. He has an undergraduate degree in accounting from Virginia Tech and a master’s degree in hospital and health administration from the Medical College of Virginia.

Roger A. Ray, MD

Roger A. Ray, MD, MBA, FACPE

Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive

Dr. Roger Ray is responsible for the management and direction of the Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group, which comprises more than 2,500 physicians and providers in over 500 locations – including four care divisions – as well as Levine Cancer Institute, Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute and CHS Behavioral Health. He also oversees the System’s chief medical officers, medical education and research, System care coordination, medical staff services, accreditation, quality and patient safety, and virtual medicine in the Charlotte Metro area.

Before joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2007, Dr. Ray served as the chief quality officer for BayCare Health System, an integrated, multi-hospital system in Tampa, Fla. His prior physician executive roles include chief medical officer for Morton Plant Mease Healthcare in Clearwater, Fla., and chief medical officer for AnMed Health System in Anderson, S.C. Dr. Ray practiced clinical neurology for 10 years before taking on his administrative roles.

He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and his medical degree from West Virginia University. He also received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Colorado. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the Certifying Commission in Medical Management.

Keith A. Smith

Keith A. Smith, J.D.

Executive Vice President and General Counsel

Keith Smith oversees the System’s legal affairs, as well as corporate compliance, privacy and risk management programs. Mr. Smith also provides guidance in the areas of corporate governance, corporate law and healthcare regulatory issues.

Smith has been an attorney with Carolinas HealthCare System’s Office of General Counsel since 1997. Prior to joining the System, he worked in private practice with the law firm Robinson, Bradshaw & Hinson, P.A. in Charlotte. Mr. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree from Duke University and a juris doctor degree from Duke University School of Law. He currently serves on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte Advisory Council and Executive Committee, and chairs its Strategic Planning Committee. He is also a member of the Dowd YMCA Advisory Board and the Carolina Thread Trail Governing Board.

Connie C. Bonebrake

Connie C. Bonebrake, MSW, LHNA

Senior Vice President and Chief Patient Experience Officer

As Senior Vice President and Chief Patient Experience Officer, Ms. Bonebrake is responsible for the strategic deployment of differentiable customer service in support of an enduring relationship with patients across the continuum of care. Prior to being appointed as Chief Patient Experience Officer, Ms. Bonebrake served as Senior Vice President of Post-Acute Care Services with responsibility for Home Health, Palliative Care, Hospice and Skilled Facility Operations. Ms. Bonebrake has been in healthcare management for over 25 years. As a licensed nursing home administrator, she joined Carolinas HealthCare System as the Executive Director of Sardis Oaks in November 1998. She has an undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and a Master’s degree in Social Work, with a concentration in aging, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mary N. Hall, MD, FAAFP

Chief Academic Officer

As Chief Academic Officer for Carolinas HealthCare System, Dr. Hall is responsible for the organization’s academic programs, including undergraduate and graduate medical education, nursing and allied health programs, continuing medical education and advanced clinical practitioner fellowships. She oversees the Center for Advanced Practice, Carolinas College of Health Sciences, Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, a facility of Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast, Mercy School of Nursing and the Charlotte Campus of the UNC School of Medicine. Dr. Hall joined Carolinas HealthCare System in 1987 as the Director of Medical Student programs in the Department of Family Medicine. She was Chair of Family Medicine for eight years and held a number of other positions, including director of medical student education, medical director of the Family Medicine Center and program director of the Family Medicine residency program. Dr. Hall is associate dean of the UNC School of Medicine Charlotte Campus, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s designated institutional official, the director of Charlotte Area Health Education Center and a professor of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She also is past president of the American Balint Society and current chair of the national Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Council. She sits on the Board of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, a group for which she recently was nominated to serve as president elect. Dr. Hall received her undergraduate degree from the State University of New York in Binghamton and her Medical degree from Cornell University Medical College. She completed her residency in family medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC and fellowships in faculty development at MUSC and at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Sara J. Mikus, RN, BSN, MPH, CHC

Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer

Ms. Mikus is the Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for Carolinas HealthCare System with primary responsibility for the System's corporate compliance programs. She also provides guidance and interpretation for governmental regulations including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services coding and billing rules.

Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 2003, Ms. Mikus held management positions in hospital operations at Catawba Valley Medical Center for over 17 years which included responsibility for clinical case management, care pathway development, medical record coding, quality monitoring/reporting and related information systems programs. She is a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree in nursing from Lenoir-Rhyne University and holds a master's degree in health policy and administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She holds a national certification in Healthcare Compliance, sits on the American Hospital Association Chief Compliance Officer forum and has served on regional and national Medicare advisory workgroups.

Mr. Richardville is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer and has overall System responsibility for information services and strategy. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1997, Mr. Richardville held a variety of administrative positions with ProMedica Health System for 12 years. Mr. Richardville is a fellow with the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society; board chair for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte College of Computing and Informatics; board member of Healthy@Home, CareConnect Carolinas, and Carolinas Shared Services; and member of College of Healthcare Information Management Executives, American College of Healthcare Executives and Health Management Academy. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor’s degree in System Analysis.

Senior Vice President – Finance

Mr. Wiggins has primary responsibility for all financial accounting and reporting for Carolinas HealthCare System. In addition, he oversees governmental payer matters and Carolinas HealthCare System’s Treasury function, including financing transactions, investments, and investor relations. Mr. Wiggins came to Carolinas HealthCare System in 1987 and has over 26 years of experience in the healthcare industry. Prior to 1987, Mr. Wiggins spent six years in public accounting and served primarily healthcare clients. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in business, with a concentration in accounting, from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a certified public accountant.

Mary Ann Wilcox, MS, RNC, NEA-BC

Senior Vice President and System Nurse Executive

Mary Ann Wilcox joined Carolinas HealthCare System in March 2011 as Senior Vice President, System Nurse Executive. Bringing over 30 years of nursing experience to her role, Ms. Wilcox represents over 14,000 nurses throughout our System to ensure consistency in nursing policy, strategy, practice and quality. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System, Ms. Wilcox held the position of Senior Vice President and System Chief Nursing Officer at WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, North Carolina. She spent 18 years at OhioHealth in Columbus, Ohio. As the Chief Nursing Officer at Riverside Methodist Hospital, the flagship of the OhioHealth System, she led the organization to achieve Magnet recognition. Ms. Wilcox serves as a local, regional, and national representative for Carolinas HealthCare System through participation in key nursing quality and professional groups. She is an active member of the American Organization of Nurse Executives, the North Carolinas Organization of Nurse Leaders and the North Carolina Nurses Association. She has been recognized as a "Great 100 Nurse" of North Carolina and is the recipient of the 2010 Ohio State University College of Nursing Distinguished Alumni Award. Ms. Wilcox holds a baccalaureate in Nursing from St. Xavier University in Chicago and a Master's degree in Nursing from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Phyllis Wingate

Phyllis Wingate

Division President – Northern Group

As Division President of the Northern Group and President of Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast, Ms. Wingate oversees a 457-inpatient-bed, Level III Trauma Center. She is also responsible for Carolinas HealthCare System University, a 130-bed, full-service community acute care hospital. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System NorthEast, Ms. Wingate served as President of Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy for three years. She was responsible for the 196-bed facility as well as Carolinas HealthCare System Behavioral Health - Charlotte. She established the first intensivist program at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy and achieved a number of operational improvements, including top quartile physician and employee satisfaction. Ms. Wingate is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in physical therapy She also received a Master’s degree in Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. A fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, she is active in the American Hospital Association, the North Carolina Hospital Association, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Physical Therapy Advisory Board, Cabarrus Economic Development Corporation, Cabarrus Health Alliance, Cabarrus Arts Council, and numerous other civic and professional organizations.

Zachary Zapack

Zachary J. Zapack, M Arch

Senior Vice President – Facilities Management Group

Mr. Zapack is responsible for the Facilities Management Group of Carolinas HealthCare System. The Facilities Management Group includes real estate services, project and construction management, plant operations and maintenance, environmental services, security, parking, food and nutrition services and corporate safety. Prior to joining Carolinas HealthCare System in 1982 as the Chief Hospital Architect, Mr. Zapack was employed as a Healthcare Project Manager for five years. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in pre-architecture and a Master of Architecture degree from Clemson University. Mr. Zapack is currently an architect in North Carolina. He has been licensed as a general contractor and a real estate broker in North Carolina.
