Every minute counts when you or a loved one is having a heart attack. Reducing what we call “time-to-treatment” is critical, because it’s in those first minutes of a heart attack that treatment is most effective. At Sanger Heart & Vascular Institute, part of Carolinas HealthCare System, we are 18 minutes faster than the national average at treating heart attacks.* From EMS personnel to expert specialists, our Chest Pain Network ensures the best available care when every minute really does count.
It begins with first responders. EMS personnel are now trained to perform electrocardiograms, which can provide immediate confirmation of a suspected heart attack. In such cases, EMS personnel can call ahead and make arrangements for immediate referral to a cath lab, a special room in the hospital for the treatment of heart blockages. They can also steer patients to the closest facility that is fully equipped to treat a heart attack 24/7, without the delays that accompany an additional patient transfer.
