Since this can be a difficult and emotional time for you and your family, Charlotte Fetal Care Center, in Charlotte, NC, is committed to conducting all necessary testing and providing you with results and available treatment options all on the same day.
We strive to make your appointment comprehensive so that you can make informed decisions about the care of your pregnancy.
Our fetal care team includes specialized physicians, nurses, genetic counselors, and sonographers. Consultants in a variety of other areas including social services, family support, and interpreter services are available when needed.
During your visit you will have a detailed ultrasound of your fetus or fetuses, possibly an echocardiogram depending on the condition we are evaluating, genetic counseling session if there is an underlying genetic predisposition to the condition, and a one on one consultation with our fetal care physicians.
If appropriate, we will ask physicians from other specialties, such as Pediatric Cardiology, Neonatology, or Urology, to also be present during this meeting so that we can have a collaborative discussion and all of your questions can be answered at one time. Throughout the process, we work closely with your referring health care provider, providing detailed information on evaluation, treatment and recommended follow-up.
The purpose of the consultation is to best define the pregnancy issues for both the mother and the baby or babies, to educate and inform the family of the underlying physiology of the condition and available treatment options, allow time for ongoing discussion and question/answer session with the family. The patient directs her own care. We are here to provide unique fetal care services to women once they feel they can make an informed decision about their desired treatment approach. Many times women may choose to be "expectantly managed" or observed and do not wish to have an intervention. Other times, the patient may choose to be treated. In these cases, we try to perform the pertinent procedure as soon as feasible so that the patient can return home in a timely manner.
For example, the consultation portion of the visit will be done in one day. If a fetal treatment is chosen, the procedure is generally scheduled for the following day. The mother would stay in the hospital for one night and then could be discharged home if she lives locally. If the patient has traveled a great distance then she can stay at our hospitality house (see local reservations) or another local venue and return in 3-4 days for a postoperative evaluation. After this point, the patient would return to her referring health care provider with detailed recommendations for follow up.
