The goal of the Advanced Clinical Practitioner Internal Medicine Fellowship program is to prepare nurse practitioners and physician assistants with forward-thinking skill sets necessary to provide optimum care to adolescent, adult and geriatric patients through a team-based approach. The program is designed to increase proficiencies and comfort level in managing complex multiple comorbidities in an evolving healthcare environment. Completion of this innovative program affords a streamlined transition to practice and promotes the practitioner’s ability to manage patient care with confidence and compassion while offering consistent and coordinated access to medical treatment throughout the adult lifespan.
The Center for Advanced Practice works in conjunction with a number of internal medicine practices across Carolinas HealthCare System to offer innovative clinical experiences to fellows advancing them one step above the traditional internal medicine practitioner. These clinical encounters offer an array of experiences in preventive, diagnostic, and procedural services and promote delivery of healthcare services through state-of-the-art technological and scientific advances.
The internal medicine fellowship is a 12-month program consisting of an introductory 3-week core curriculum followed by an 11-month course of advanced didactic education, clinical experience, simulation training, case presentations, specialty rotations and team learning discussions. This unique curriculum is integrated with a behavioral health model and emphasizes advanced skill sets in behavioral health therapy to include a knowledge base of community resources and therapeutic guidelines. The fellowship experience further promotes continuity of care for patients transitioning from inpatient to outpatient care.
Graduates will perform with increased proficiency in the areas of preventive, emergent, acute, chronic, rehabilitative, palliative and end-of-life patient care with developed expertise in behavioral health diagnoses commonly encountered in outpatient clinics placing them one step above the traditional internal medicine provider.Fellowship Structure Includes
