General Education Course Rationale for Nursing

General Education Outcomes

General education is that portion of the collegiate experience that addresses the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values characteristic of educated persons. The Carolinas College of Health Sciences (CCHS) General Education curriculum is unique in many ways, but one distinction is that General Education courses emphasize particular goals, objectives and outcomes. Specific courses articulate their own objectives, but all CCHS General Education courses emphasize at least one of the following learning goals:

After completing General Education Courses at Carolinas College of Health Sciences, students will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, either in written or oral format.
  • Understand the fundamental concepts, methods and applications of the natural and life sciences and their impact on human experience.
  • Examine and understand human behavior in different theoretical, societal, cultural and/or institutional contexts.
  • Think critically, apply abstract concepts, and draw conclusions from course concepts.

BIO 101/102
…obtain a thorough understanding of the physiological processes of all systems of the human body and how they operate and interact to maintain an optimal state of health. To also become familiar with the anatomical structure of the body microscopically and macroscopically and relate the structures to their functions. This body of knowledge will provide students with a solid foundation for success in future healthcare programs. Students must also learn to apply these concepts in the laboratory setting.
BIO 200
... understand the relationship between various types of microbes and the diseases seen in humans. Students also need to understand how genetic variations affect disease processes as well as ways the human body reacts to and fights against microbes. Scientific methodology and critical inquiry are vital to the understanding of these concepts. Students must also learn to apply acquired information in the laboratory setting.
ENG 101
…develop exceptional writing skills, understand the importance and correct procedures for citing sources, develop a depth of writing ability, and be able to develop a persuasive argument in written form. In today’s society, it is imperative for healthcare professionals to be able to communicate clearly. The quality of their written and oral communication has a direct effect on patient care.
ENG 231
(Humanities Elective)
…gain both reading comprehension and written communication skills. In the literature course, students gain appreciation of both writers and literature as an important means of social, political and cultural expression, thereby providing them the ability to think critically about a variety of literary genres.
HEA 102/NUR 100 … effectively communicate within a healthcare environment and understand medical records commonly used by health care professionals. An overview of each body system is presented followed by symptomatic and diagnostic terms, tests and procedures, operative terms, and therapeutic terms.
MAT 101 …demonstrate efficient and accurate computation skills and develop numerical reasoning ability. General education mathematics courses prepare for understanding the mathematical applications for scientific methodology.
PSY 101 …develop an understanding of the scientific methodology and analytic processes used to investigate behavior and mental processes, the diverse processes (physiological, developmental, social, cognitive, and individual) that interact and influence behavior and mental functions, as well as develop an awareness of the applications of psychology to everyday life and illustrate the ability to critically evaluate information.
PSY 102

 

…develop an understanding of the scientific methodology and analytic processes used to investigate behavior and mental processes; to understand the various biological, cognitive and socioemotional influences and changes that occur from conception to death, as well as develop an awareness of the applications of knowledge pertaining to how we grow and change over the lifespan to everyday life and illustrate the ability to critically evaluate information.
SOC 101 …develop an awareness of scientific methodologies and analytical skills to assist in achieving a better understanding of the social contexts and social forces that shape personal and interpersonal behaviors and interactions within society.
