The research arm of the of the Carolinas Trauma Network is the Research Center of Excellence (COE). The Research Center of Excellence combines the talents and strengths of Carolinas Medical Center’s Departments of Emergency Medicine, General Surgery-Trauma, Orthopaedic Surgery, Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine, Neurosciences and Dickson Advanced Analytics (DA2) (Formerly R. Stuart Dickson Institute for Health Studies) with those of the affiliated Carolinas HealthCare System medical centers.

The objectives of the Carolinas Trauma Network Research Center of Excellence are:

  • To develop and maintain an efficient multidisciplinary infrastructure to support the conduct of trauma related research across the continuum of care provided by Carolinas HealthCare System
  • To facilitate collaboration across disciplines, facilities, and scientific methods to contribute to the evidence base in trauma care
  • To  identify and prioritize the most critical issues challenging delivery of care for trauma patients across all Carolinas HealthCare System facilities
  • To contribute to the science of conducting trauma research on challenging patients in challenging environments
  • To use Comparative Effectiveness Research strategies to identify the safest, most effective and least costly treatments for injured patients
  • To leverage the strengths of this COE and Carolinas HealthCare System to attract external funding to support trauma related basic and translational science, clinical research, and population-based/implementation research.

The Research Center of Excellence team considers injury research areas with established national funding mechanisms that impact the communities the System serves. Initial key topics include: evaluation and treatment of patients with mild or moderate Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) and the evaluation and care of the geriatric trauma patient.
