The rehabilitative staff at Carolinas HealthCare System played an integral part in combating a potentially devastating medical emergency for patient Robert Summerville.
We are proud to offer one of the largest comprehensive stroke rehabilitation programs in the Southeast. Our stroke program was awarded certification from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and was one of the first facilities in the nation to apply and receive this certification.
Carolinas Rehabilitation is the first institution in the world to implant an investigational implantable neurostimulation system currently being studied for the treatment of post-stroke shoulder pain. We are also one of just a few centers in the country studying botulinum toxin and its utility in blocking neuromuscular transmission to alleviate the effects of spasticity. We are part of Carolinas Stroke Network, a comprehensive network that provides rapid, state-of-the-art treatment to patients suffering acute stroke.
Our stroke-dedicated interdisciplinary team works collaboratively with each patient to individually tailor care to address the patient's specific needs. Our goal is to get patients home at the highest level of independence possible.
This team is led by one of our dedicated board certified, stroke specialized physicians. In addition to the physician, the patient's team may consist of:
To help speed our patients' recovery, we offer intensive therapy during the inpatient stay, up to three hours per day. Additionally, the rehabilitation team will educate family members to assist their loved ones.
We continually strive to meet excellent standards in our efforts to help patients who have sustained life-altering injuries return to their homes and communities. Our multiphase, comprehensive approach helps Carolinas Rehabilitation's outcomes exceed both regional and national standards.
Recognizing the need of our patients to receive outpatient services close to home and have family an integral part of the team, we offer comprehensive outpatient stroke rehabilitation at several locations. Our stroke specialized physicians continue to oversee and coordinate the patients' care to maximize each individual's recovery. The occupational, physical and speech-language therapists meet weekly to coordinate patient therapy goals and round with our physicians monthly. Patients meet with our physicians in our stroke rehabilitation clinic on a regular basis to monitor progress and update the plan of care.
