Early Diagnosis of Colorectal Cancer Often Leads to a Complete Cure
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), colorectal cancer is one of the leading cancer-related deaths in the United States. The ACS estimates there were 103,170 new cases of colon cancer in the past year. There were 40,290 cases of rectal cancer.
The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about one in 20 (5.1 percent).
The good news is that the death rate (the number of deaths per 100,000 people per year) from colorectal cancer has been dropping over the past 20 years for both men and women. Improved treatment for colorectal cancer is one reason for the rise in survivor rates. Early screenings are another reason why the rate of death has fallen in recent years.
Screenings allow physicians to identify polyps which can develop into cancer. Screenings also allow colorectal cancers to be found in early stages when they are much easier to cure. Early screenings combined with better treatment methods have resulted in more than one million survivors of colorectal cancer in the United States.
