Carolinas HealthCare System

Jeffrey A. Cleveland, MD, uses PowerChart Touch on his iPad at Charlotte Pediatric Clinic-Matthews.

After piloting in the ambulatory setting, PowerChart Touch Ambulatory is now available for all Carolinas HealthCare System providers. The chart review tool supports iPads and iPhones for fast and easy workflows for physicians.

While the tool was designed for the ambulatory setting, any provider may still find it useful though it is not a total replacement tool for PowerChart desktop.

“I have found PowerChart Touch useful for quick review of the patient’s records, especially when I am away from the office,” said Jeffrey A. Cleveland, MD, CHS Medical Group Canopy Medical Director and a pediatrician. “I also find it very helpful to use as a tool for Dragon Dictation to enter narrative aspects of the patient’s visit into my note. I typically do this in the room while with the patient as I summarize their presenting symptoms. I have gotten uniformly positive feedback from my patients about this.”

Potential uses for PowerChart Touch include:

  • On-call or after-hours use: PowerChart Touch allows a provider to log in to EMR from anywhere.
  • Pre-visit preparation: Patient records can easily be reviewed from home prior to their office visit. All notes (except scanned documents) are available for review along with problem list, allergies, medications, social and family history and commonly used labs and diagnostic reports.
  • Narrative capture:  Using the iPad microphone and the Dragon tool built into PowerChart Touch, providers may find this an efficient way to record the subjective history.
  • Teamwork: In office settings where providers have a clinical assistant in the room with them participating in EMR tasks, many providers may find it useful to have PowerChart Touch open as a second device. This would facilitate reviewing recent medical encounters with the patient, reviewing labs or problems, and providing a way to enter some or all of the HPI while with the patient.

Note: Providers must use their own devices. To get set up, call the CHS Support Center at 704-446-6161.
