If your child has congenital heart disease, you may think he or she needs to avoid typical summer activities such as swimming or playing sports. But what if there was a place where your child could be a kid without having to think about his or her condition? That’s the mission of Camp LUCK in Cherryville, NC.
Camp LUCK (Lucky Unlimited Cardiac Kids) offers support for children and their families, in a supportive, worry-free environment. The camp allows children to build self-esteem, friendships and character through a variety of fun, outdoor activities.
Co-founded by James René Herlong, MD, Levine Children’s Hospital pediatric cardiologist, Camp LUCK is a not-for-profit, medically supervised camp. It offers the choice of a family or kids-only camp experience.
The family camp, offered one weekend a year in May, gives families a chance to have fun and bond with one another. The kids-only camp is held one week in August for children ages 7 to 14. Here, they can spend time with other kids who are just like them and enjoy a true summer camp experience, while receiving the medical supervision they need. Camp LUCK is free for all campers. The camp is located just 45 minutes outside of Charlotte, NC, at the beautiful 7,000-acre Camp Cherokee in Kings Mountain State Park.
We are committed to family-centered care that extends beyond hospital walls. Learn more about Camp LUCK and find out how your child or your family can attend.
