Acquired brain injury is an injury to the brain that occurs after birth. Disability from an acquired brain injury is not progressive, meaning the onset is typically sudden and often occurs without warning. These characteristics make it different from a developmental disability, which occurs at birth or as a learning disability.
Acquired brain injury includes many types of diagnoses such as:
- Infection to the brain
- Anoxia (lack oxygen in the brain)
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
A traumatic brain injury is an injury to the brain that is caused by an external physical force such as a motor vehicle collision, a fall or shaken baby syndrome. Every injury to the brain has different effects or consequences.
Carolinas HealthCare System offers a comprehensive array of programs to help patients affected by a brain injury throughout their lifetime. In addition to inpatient and outpatienttherapy programs, we also participate in research and development programs such as the TBI Model System and Project STAfR to assist individuals affected by brain injury and enhance their quality of life.fnd
